Uruguay youngsters receive batch of OLPC XOs

May 14th 2007 11:18PM (Engadget)
It's funny how no matter what country you name, someone will always say that the school system is alot better than the one in the United States =P. I think the guy that stated the schools in Uruguay "Lack for books, paper, and materials" was the only guy with a post that has any semblance of truth to it.

Sorry kids, but the US (Other than the south, boy are people dumb in the south) has one of the best schooling systems in the world. Not to mention that it's one of (if not the) highest volume schooling systems in the world. The United States puts out a higher volume of well-educated students than any other country on earth. But go ahead, compare us to a country with 1% of our population (Like some European countries) and tell us that our schooling system is a failure and that as a whole, we are a nation of uneducated dolts.

Akiijikan-

Because /b/ is down due to...uhh....well it's been colored over. And moot is very, very slow at fixing things.

But that has nothing to do with anon getting lulz from a dumb hand-crank operated junk box being force fed to children from Uruguay.

T-Minus 10 days until Uruguay finds 4chan, and then /b/, and the entire country will join our legion.

Connect360 returns after being shut out by Dashboard update

So Microsoft plugged a hole that allowed a third-party company to profit off of their machine, and that is a bad thing? I could see if the software was free, but if they charge for it, they should have to pay licensing fee's. I hope they get sued into oblivion

'Japan-only' Eternal Sonata demo works in U.S.

By reporting this, you've basically kicked any non-hawk eyed live users with Japanese accounts in the balls. It's a race now, whether or not they will check for new demo's first, or whether Microsoft will plug the hole first.

Promotional Zune sports Halo 3 branding

May 14th 2007 5:49AM (Engadget)
They'd have been better off making the back glossy with the Halo 3 logo and that beam of light coming out of that ancient forerunner structure (Look at the promotional materials part of the Bungie site if you don't know what I mean) but I guess this looks a bit nicer than the normal zune.

Having said that, someone earlier had it right when he said that you might aswell take a normal zune and write "I am a virgin" on it, because that is what people are going to think if they see you with a zune instead of an Ipod.

About the same thing they think if you've got Linux.

The Zune will be feeling some Halo 3 love

May 14th 2007 4:16AM (Joystiq Xbox)
Detractors abound, but the Ipod really is the best MUSIC player on the market. Having said that, it is more expensive than similar (storage capacity) devices. Where the Zune really stands out is in it's large screen that makes it alot more friendly for watching video on (Ipod "Video" is a joke and everyone knows it).

If my Ipod broke tomorrow, and I saw a Halo 3 Zune, I'd give it some consideration. I'm not sure how laughed at I'd be for being one of the 10 zune owners though =/

Oh and the helmet that comes with the 130 dollar legendary pack? Sweet. Thing is fonkin HUGE. Must have it.

Why hasn't the 360 joined the F@H fight?

May 13th 2007 11:23AM (Joystiq Xbox)
Fed Up is obviously a Troll, his ilk show up whenever there is a story about the Xbox 360's "Problems". I've had 1 console since launch day. No problems. The same can be said for 2 friends of mine (as far as "From Launch day" goes; they camped out with me) and 3 or 4 friends that have slightly newer 360's. The Internet Echo chamber would have you believe that the failure rate is high, but it's no higher than any other electronic device, and it's certainly lower than PC's (or Mac's).

Honestly, I have no interest in running Folding@home. So far it's gotten no results of any value, and I don't imagine it's going to get some anytime soon. Basically you are running up your electric bill to solve what equates to 1% (Maybe, if the project is REALLY a success) towards curing *Insert disease name here*. In other words, this project will not cure squat, and you are wasting your time. It sure makes you feel good though, I guess?

Folding@home on Xbox 360 under consideration

May 13th 2007 10:39AM (Engadget)
I love it how Engadget is somewhat of a 50/50 split between neutral journalism, and stories like this one where they call someone (in this case Peter Moore) a greedy bastard, and then go so far as to imply that he doesn't care about curing disease, all in the same article. What he means by "Value in it" is if the user base would even use a Folding@home client if they were to put one on the 360. Would I? Hell no. The 360 is pretty loud, and that's fine when guns are going off, and explosions are happening, but would I want to listen to it by itself? No, absolutely not. It's not as if putting the client on the 360 would be free, it would take man hours to get it up and running, and like it or not they DO have to take into consideration whether or not it would be good for PR or bad for PR. And like it or not, but Sony made this a PR battle long before Microsoft did. The only reason that Folding@home was including with the PS3 was for PR!

Like Microsoft or not, implying that Peter Moore is some sort of diabolical anti-curing disease PR monster is out there, and a little crude.

Today's most almost in-the-wild video: Halo beta footage

May 13th 2007 4:44AM (Joystiq)
This video is running at less than half of the resolution we'll be playing it at on the 16th, and already I can tell that the textures are alot more defined across the board than with Halo 2. The gun switching seems alot more fluid, the control scheme seems spot-on (wouldn't expect anything less from halo) and it just generally feels like an improved game (over Halo 2). Is it Gears of War? No. But did you really want them to make over Halo in such a gritty brown-covered way? While all the other games on the market are turning to brown, Halo 3 seems to be going for brighter colors, which is something I've been sorely missing with games like Gears, Twilight Princess, Resistance Fall of Man etc.
