Here's the ironic thing: I think Nintendo thought they could get their "core" audience - fanboys who love Nintendo, like myself who got my Nintendo start with the NES in 1987 - to simply buy the 3DS based on the fact that it was new Nintendo tech. Problem was, there weren't enough great 3DS games to play at launch. Obvious, I know. But here's the other part of it - I think they thought they could simply use DS games as a placeholder since the 3DS is backwards compatible.

That's where I think they misjudged their audience wildly. In a down economy, you're trying to basically sell new hardware for games that are available on another platform? One that you've released FOUR iterations of over the past 5-6 years, and a platform that those same Nintendo geeks (again, like myself) most definitely have and love playing?

What I'm saying is - they tried to sell a 3DS to play DS games because they rushed it out to market with no other products in the early/mid 2011 pipeline, hoping to stem the tide of their losses. And it clearly didn't work. (And yes, I know there were 18 3DS games at launch, and OoT in June, but ... well clearly I'm not alone.)

I really hope Nintendo figures out how to spread out their product more evenly so this doesn't happen again. I want them to succeed, and seeing losses this staggering (economy aside) is sickening.

Maybe they got the Kid Icarus license for Nintendo (from Factor 5?)
