Mortal Kombat II bloodies up the PS3 April 12th

Apr 11th 2007 6:30PM (Joystiq)
Neal, your comments remind me of the famous "Roy is better than Marth!" comments in Smash Bros Melee that were (are?) prevalent around GameFAQs when the game was released (mainly because Roy's up+B could be used to beat Cruel Melee).

The short answer?

No. No he is not.

Play someone who is actually GOOD at the game, and then I'm sure you'll start to see just how wrong you are in your opinions of the best characters. I'd love to see it, actually.

NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams confirmed for Wii this winter

Apr 2nd 2007 4:06AM (Joystiq)
It seems like OhJustSomeRandomGuy was talking about what happened to the Sonic franchise, which will now presumably happen to the NiGHTS franchise. He's mimicking Sonic review quotes as an indication of what Sonic Team will do to this franchise.

No one else picked up on the sarcasm in his text, eh?

10 things to hate about the PSP and DS

"The PSP isn't overpriced. It's doing fine. Sure, it's not selling like a DS... but who cares?"

Hmm... maybe Sony?

MIDI is the future of game audio

Mar 8th 2007 4:55PM (Joystiq)
Do you remember IGN's review of Twilight Princess? They slam the audio for being MIDI and not orchestrated, even though the music in that game was absolutely incredible as far as I'm concerned. I was extremely ticked off; you can't just write off a soundtrack because it's not orchestrated. The catchiest and most memorable videogame tunes of all time are ALL MIDI. Twilight Princess did a great job of creating a moving atmosphere with its soundtrack, despite not boasting 110 people holding an instrument.

Sometimes MIDI is just better. Orchestrated stuff is nice for some things, and not so nice for others.

Super Paper Mario GDC '07 impressions

Mar 8th 2007 7:22AM (Joystiq)
I was hoping for 14 Super Paper Mario comments, and instead, I got about 4. The rest had to do with responses to flamebait posted by a troll. Sigh. Just leave them alone, and they'll leave. Trolls don't do well when they don't get any responses.

I think the game looks great. The fact that size or shadowing doesn't tell you what objects are behind or in front of you in the 2D case, I think, makes the game more interesting (even if it's not how such a situation would really work in real life). This means you can never be sure what's in the 3D world from the 2D perspective, which is clearly what the developers wanted to be the case.

Definitely on my "must buy" list, and a good solid title for Wii, at about the right time!

EA busting into rhythm games 'sooner than you think'

Mar 3rd 2007 1:03AM (Joystiq)
Guitar Hero is a great game, but most definitely lags behind the Bemani games for fun factor, longevity, and difficulty. I wouldn't say it saved the music game genre. It was just another good addition TO that genre.

However, Harmonix makes good games. I'm not convinced EA has the know-how to make a great music game (a similar reason why I believe GH3, developed by non-music-game studio Neversoft, will be by far the weakest entry in the series). Music games need a good, ingenious (and well implemented) idea to be fun... seems the cards are against EA all over the place.

Japanese software sales: week ending 02.25.07

Mar 1st 2007 6:18AM (Joystiq)
It's interesting. If you were to show this Top 10 list (just the top 10) to someone 3 years ago, they might think Sony was running away with the next-gen race, and all is as it was back then. Either that, or that the PSP was killing the DS.

Ahh, how statistics frozen in time can be so misleading.

GameStop reaching out for your Twilight Princess

Feb 16th 2007 7:59PM (Joystiq)
I've never sold any game back to a retailer, and that's not about to start, especially with my choice for 2006 GOTY (TP).

I still don't understand why people trade in all the games they buy. Don't you want to save some for posterity or nostalgia? Especially a game like TP.

Crackdown patched on arrival

Feb 12th 2007 11:14PM (Joystiq)
Oh yeah, and the game that was recalled was a budget title for DS that probably didn't even get turned on by the developers before it was shipped. All these titles being patched for 360 are big name releases that are being heavily marketed.

Patching has its benefits, but, just like microtransactions, sure has its negatives too. Developers are given an excuse to be shoddy with their work, and they force consumers to pay full price for an incomplete project.

Crackdown patched on arrival

Feb 12th 2007 11:04PM (Joystiq)
You know what would be better than a patch AND a recall? The programmers doing their job properly the first time around, just like almost every game in existence before Xbox 360 came along and gave programmers everywhere an excuse to be more lazy and not do thorough enough testing.
