Sep 26th 2011 10:24PM (Joystiq)Reposting this response to your review here, if you don't mind.
This game is like a shoot'em up in that half the fun is in getting the higher score/rank. Keeping the multiplier up gets to be really intense. You describe it as "unfair" in that it can easily be reset to zero from getting hit too much. Those special attacks that you neglected become quite valuable. At a high level of play, it's necessary to instantly recognize what's the best way to deal with an enemy group in that exact situation. The fact that your character build is based solely on equipment means that you can change your powers and strategy between enemy waves. This is especially useful when switching between equipment with different magical effects.
One thing that you didn't really cover was the difference between the characters. (I know, every review tend to get focused on the cost, and not what you actually get.) I was worried that I'd paid $5 for basically different skins, but it surprised me that the three classes played so differently from each other. The difference in their abilities (attacks, movement, speed, blocking) completely changes the playstyle one must use to play well. For example, enemies that are easy for the Warrior might become a pain for the Wizard, and vice versa.
As for the co-op puzzles, some (if not most) are definitely doable in single player mode. Might need to use barrels and/or axes to activate more than one target at a time, a strategically thrown monster bait to get a panel stepped on, or maybe just a healing totem to brute force your way through the traps.
"I really wanted to love Crimson Alliance. I had this image in my mind of co-op Torchlight (a better buy for the money, in my opinion), but Crimson Alliance lacks depth, length, and replay value." Perhaps the biggest roadblock to enjoying Crimson Alliance is not realizing that it's the equivalent of a shooting game. The missing depth, length, and replay value (different views of the same thing?) is in gettting your character(s) the equipment so that you can tweak your builds just right to achieve the higher ranks.

Sep 16th 2011 5:26PM (Joystiq)Yes! This is what I expect for Kinect games, not just some tacked-on waving, but to make the controls feel natural.
