indeed cultural literacy is paramount. i think it is necessary to draw on all media. books, movies, games, music, photography, theater, all of it can have very positive effects on a game.
i knew this happened but to say that it doesn't matter is foolishness. i am seriously seeking a future in game development, and this makes it that much harder for me and all the other devs out there. it puts even more pressure on all of us.
i keep my wii sideways because it looks better, fits better, and changing disks isn't so weird. and besides when it is vertical, you block the intake fans, i'm just not comfortable with that... other than that, very nice.
on the lights comment, ps3 should have red, 360 green, and wii blue...that would be awesome...
and the controller-on-rack scheme would work particularly well if it was placed by the entrance to the room... walk in the house after a long day, pick up the controller, and settle in.
although it isn't exactly the type of social issue we are reffering to, i plan on being a devloper once i get my college degree. i have always wanted to make games that dealt with social injustice. and i have found (at least for now) that the best way to deal with it is to have a single avatar-based character who combats these injustices and actively struggles for equality, freedoms, etc. now in order to m ake this fun, one would most likely have to make the game in action/rpg format and have that avatar based character evolve with their surrounding environment and become a vigilante or some sort of leader for a resistance against oppression. i fully plan on pursueing this and i can't wait to toy around with all of the various possibilities...
i camped. i got my wii. one of thr groups i was hanging out with actually had a barrel fire and was using that for warmth. one disgruntled parent attacked the manager after learning that there were no wii's left (she got there at 10:30 am, so she was late)...anyway, my experience wasn't as cool as joystiq's but i am tired as all hell and i can't wait to sleep :)
all things considered, we as gamers, should support the companies (or company if you have the disease known as fanboyism). trying to buy something just because the company who is selling it ia losing money more moeny than the others, is just ridiculous. and, like i said, we need to support our companies, that is our job. without us they have no money. without money, they can't do anything. which means we get stuck in the end. i will try to buy all three consoles, but the ps3 doesn't really have any games that interest me. meaning that it is not worth my time or my money, which means, for me, sony has failed. which means they are not my company anymore, so i will not be supporting them, at least for awhile.

Are some topics off-limits for "serious" games?
