Teen informants sold *GASP* M-rated games!

Nov 30th 2006 10:24PM (Joystiq)
If they are serious about solving this, they have to do what UK did with selling alcohol.

In the UK, there was a period of time when those working at a cash till was PERSONALLY prosecuted for selling alcohol to minors. Since then, everyone working in a supermarket are jittery about selling alcohol to anyone who look remotely like un-adult.

Now most supermarkets ask you for an ID if you don't look adult beyond resonable doubt.

Lower the coming of age to teens i.e. 13. That should solve many of today's problems.

New Irish tale spun with anti-gaming sentiment

Nov 30th 2006 9:27PM (Joystiq)
Way of life is a choice of an individual. It's so easy to criticize an environmental factor, such as gaming, and make it a scapegoat for problems which are ultimately a subjective problem.

This "Irish" problem (it just happened to be in Ireland this time) is a typical manifestation of this irony.

Hands-on with Shure's audiophile-friendly E500PTH

Nov 30th 2006 5:46PM (Engadget)
I have this E500, Westone UM2 and Etymotic ER-4p, and ER-4p still remains to be my favourite. Those of you who prioritize beautiful high frequency over base, I recommend Etymotic ER-4p. It's much cheaper as well and I recommend fitting a Westone UM2 foam on ER-4p to maximize base.

Still, E500 is good, no doubt about it. They managed to pull off 'E5c' with low impedance in E500. Very nice. It is on the heavy (as in the base) end though, so much so that for me it seems to drown the highs. You can deal with that if you have an equalizer, but in which case you could just use Etymotic's ER-4p and boosting base.

But, if you like music that relies on base and if you can't stand music without feeling the base shaking your skull, then don't get ER-4p. E500 is much better for that.

Comparing the Xbox 360 and PS3 side-by-side

Nov 30th 2006 1:07PM (Joystiq)
Generally I don't trust cross-platform games' ability to make accurate comparison. At the end of the day, their aim is to market it as widely as possible, as opposed to programming them to take full advantage of the target machine.

Like it was with shaders on PC, PS3's cell requires specific coding to take full advantage. I suspect all they did was to "port" it to PS3 without specific programming.

In short, this attempt at graphical comparison is meritless as it doesn't actually get to the bottom of all this.

Nintendo's new Zelda falls flat

Nov 12th 2006 10:43AM (Joystiq)
That review is missing context. It's more like nitpicking on the gaps you would find in any game, and narrowly focussing on them from general perspective just for the sake of critical writing. Describing the game "as is" in the context of its gaming would have been more desirable.

Nice try, but more perceptive of us see through this. Incidentally, did you know they forgot to implement toilets in this Zelda installment?

Today's hottest game video: Japanese launch report

Nov 11th 2006 7:20AM (Joystiq)
Sorry to double post, but somehow I forgot to type the key line - that I think PS3 will have the unique flavour of console traditionalism, as opposed to PC centric gaming of 360 or innovationism of Wii.

So, it's all wide open.

Today's hottest game video: Japanese launch report

Nov 11th 2006 7:12AM (Joystiq)
PS3's future is wide open. Those of you who think they've already lost aren't seeing this far and deep enough.

It is my prediction that many of the key Japanese players such as SquareEnix, Konami, Koei, Capcom are likely to remain mainly on PS3 in a long run. 360's foot print in Japan is nonexistant, and I can't see why the devs would move over to such a minority console. Moving to Wii is also unlikely as those devs all have big franchises that rely on high processing power.

No doubt they will make good games for all 3 consoles, but the main titles have nowhere to go but to PS3.

"Please stop assuming terms are Engrish just because you don't understand where they originated."

James, I agree with all you said, but you should also stop assuming that he's a "racist bastard" just because he said something is Engrish.

Some people are so quick to jump on the you-are-racist bandwagon when they see something they don't like. Boggles my mind.
