Sigmund - It doesn't make sense. The 7th SPU is reserved for the OS on the PS3. There are lots of article about the architecture.
MCR: there is 512 MB RAM divided into two different parts. The Cell processor can read from both parts. And yes, it multitasks, it merely a decision of how much they will reserve for OS purposes. It doesn't have anything to do with the hardware. It's in the SDK.
I don't own a 360 or PS3, however, I personally don't want a console to act like Windows. When playing a game, I prefer the developers to have the console running a game as close to full throttle as possible, with as little as possible running in the background.
@14 You seem to forget that the RETAILER order PS3s from SONY. SONY is not pushing 20/60 out in the shops at their own pleasure. If retailers don't think they can sell 20 Gb systems, they will only order 60 Gb systems from SONY. So, yes, SONY knows what the retailer want everytime the retailers re-order.
It IS more expensive living in here Europe. Consumer electronics have always been expensive. I mean, you can't even get a WiFi adapter for the 360 for under USD 100 (at least here) or hard drive space for that matter. The PS3 packs more features, therefore it costs more.
Every piece of electronics that Americans buy, we have to pay more for the same. Europe is not one country, you know? There are language barriers, rules and regulations, different tax systems etc. It's just more expensive doing business here. Always has been...
The PS3 is not expensive. It's sold BELOW cost price and is a feature-packed piece of hardware. Take a look at the price of a digital camera or MP3 player. That would be considered expensive, compared to what you get or compared to equipment like the PS3.
I'd rather listen to Phil than e.g. listen to a guy like Peter Moore. He is all about bragging. Just a marketing guy. Phil has - like it or not - hands on with an amazingly large group of studios.
Anyway, looking forward to see what GDC info we'll get.
Peter Moore's open letter to the press is just way too much, in my opinion. It might be their preferred style to sound like they have ended the dependencies of fossil fuels, but being so full of themselves doesn't sell me. On top of that - claiming another large chunk of my computers resources, to do what i've always done... I'm just going to keep investing in console gaming instead.
Their financial year goes from April 2007 to March 2008. So, Haze could come in April or May 2007 or summer 2007. The title "may return by 2008" is of course worst case.
PS3 background downloading already broken?
