Miyamoto's future: unique, simple, nonviolent games

Feb 19th 2007 8:04AM (Joystiq)
16. (REUYL): Wind Waker's gameplay and violence was the exact same thing as Ocarina. Hell, it was a DARKER game. It's just that the orinal art style scared you. ;-(

The verdict is in: children prefer the DS

Aug 27th 2006 6:51AM (Joystiq Nintendo)
Ah, some nice ol' PSP fanboy trolling. =D
If Nintendo only make games for children then what's with stuff like Zelda, Metroid and the like? What about third party devs that did quite a lot of T/M games for DS?

Also, what the hell is so bad about a console having games that also appeal to children? I see nothing wrong with it, since kids are also part of the gaming community. Only appealing to the 'adult' market (read: 13 year olds that think 50 Cent Bulletproof makes them mature) has been one of the PSP's flaws for some time. Stuff like Loco Roco and Exit might fix that though.

What a totally informative, completely legal PSP-related post. =o

The winner of Leipzig? PSP

*both portables have some really good games
Jesus, my phrasing's been pretty terrible lately.

Sorry, didn't put much thought into that post, but I'm just annoyed by the way loads of major developers just port old games instead of starting new franchises. The PSP did have some really good original games, but it was pretty disappointing hearing that, say, Disgaea and Gitaroo Man were just ports, and both have really good new games.

Actually, I used to live in a box before some hobo took it away. I now live in soil.

...It's not half bad.

And about "The DS goes for little cry babies who's parents buy their consoles for them, and the PSP goes for adults." - Anybody who whines about games being "kiddy" and needs a PSP to enforce their masculinity isn't ever going to look mature, no matter how many gore-fests they play. Same goes for Nintendo fanboys calling Loco Roco, Daxter and "kiddy" or "gay". (oh the irony) Both DS and PSP have their kiddy and "mature" games, and they ARE mostly aimed at different people. DS is for people that just want new games for their portable, like Nintendo's main series and certain quirky, 'gimmicky' gems that pop up at times, and PSP is aimed at people who want a huge multimedia center on the go, and play updated versions some of their favorite PS1/2 games.

@ Pixelator and other people:
I find the PSP a nice portable and all, but at the same time I think it's sort of weird that some people here rant about the Wii and DS for actually requiring *gasp* hand and body motions to control. OH LORD. O:

I don't know about you, but I've played my DS and Ouendan (which requires tons of tapping, rubbing and spinning the stylus across the screen) for hours and I don't feel like my hands are about to fall off any time soon. Stylus controls have been pretty damn fun so far and definetely beat normal controls if they're used properly. In fact, there happens to be a really revolutionary and successful game that's ENTIRELY based on "working your ass off" and doing more than moving your fingers around on a controller from the confort of your couch, surrounded by Red Bull cans. It's known as "Dance Dance Revolution" and I'm pretty sure that most Sony fans have heard of it. And correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't remember anyone's body blowing up after having played it for large amounts of time

As for the "tiny, cheap looking, ridiculously named Wii", at least note that just because loads of developers like EA are going to release countless gimmicky and unoriginal games for it, it doesn't mean it won't get a huge swarm of original and great games later, either. As for its looks, it looks fine to me and I never thought small size is a BAD thing. Amd that's all I'll say on this subject.

If there's one thing I agree with Pixelator on, it's the whole Metroid thing. Most full 3D games, especially FPSs, just don't work on the DS very well at all. No matter what "graphics aren't everything" stuff Nintendo fanboys use to protect FPSs on the DS, the low resolution and small screen don't really help at all, and the DS won't ever get even close to actual mouse-like controls.

Take Advance Wars for instance, I've tried using the touchscreen controls for a while but noticed how stupidly useless it was, quickly getting back to normal analog controls. Of course, the touch screen is fantastic in games that DON'T just try to use it as a mouse, such as Kirby, Ouendan and Wario Ware. Are all those games "gimmicky"? Probably. Are they fun, and perfect in that "pick up and play" factor that's ever so important for a portable game? Damn straight.

Reggie says PSP not even on the map

At Pixelator:
Doesn't change the fact that he didn't even mention the PSP in this newspost.
