Apple and Sony are using different processors for far different reasons. PowerPC has no future on the desktop. IBM does not want to keep throwing money down the drain. IBM will never rival Intel in the PC market.
#15 The reason their are not going to use a Pentium or an AMD is because they cannot own any of the IP. Microsoft learned this the hard way with the first Xbox. Sony and Nintendo already knew this. The console makers must be able to lower costs over the lifespan of the system. Intel nor AMD will allow third parties to make their chips.
For all the AMD fanboys, the Pentium 4 was crippled by Intel on purpose. Look at the performance of the new Pentium M(Yonah) It kills a dual-core Athlon 64. That's WITHOUT an on-die northbidge. In five years AMD will not matter.
