I know the "hardcore" gaming community is so over this shit, but I'm definitely curious to know how many people still log hours with rockband/guitar hero on a regular basis.
Havent' played Dragon Quest because while I have all 3 current gen home consoles, I am completely rubbed the wrong way by Nintendo's and Sony's handheld offerings. They need to fix their shit and get on board with reality. Regardless, I'm sure the DS game is great--maybe I'll play it when they port it to iOS ;) Haha, I also played the most recent Paper Mario, and while I agree that it is very smart and self-aware, for some reason it just really didn't hook me :-/ I guess my game tastes are changing; everyone changes I suppose.
I think this issue has a ton to do with the current gaming demographic compared to what the demographic was when JRPGs were popular. There have always been gamers of all-ages, but when JRPGs were most popular, the fanbase was much more heavily weighted towards children. It seems to me that they may have garnered so much wide eyed wonder when we played them in our childhood and early teens as they were some of the few games to use more mature themes without taking things to parent outrage levels of a game with blood and fatalities. Speaking of the text and dialog, it is true that many JRPGs have strange esoteric and heavy handed, forced symbolism. It's the kind of shit that M. Night Shayamalalamanan and C. Nolan do in their films that makes a few people go "ooooooh that's magical and crazy!" and then everyone else turn their heads thinking "...ok that was just way too awkward and forced to be captivating or anything less than embarassing." We don't like the dialog and themes now because me and you and the rest of our formerly obsessive JRPG fanbase aren't kids yearning to be a part of magical adulthood anymore. We ARE adults, and we probably would love to play JRPGs even today if they weren't marketed or aimed awkwardly between kids and adults, completely misfiring.
Anyone who is convinced this couldn't be good needs to stop for a moment and think about one thing. Could this have Kinect support? Your mind is now blown.
