Game developers are laid off all the time, it's part of the job knowing you might get the boot after a project is done. That said, if I had to choose, I'd prefer Zipper to remain and Slant Six to go considering their vast difference in quality. I never said I /wished/ for them to close, I instead stated my preference. Lastly, it was a joke, maybe you've heard of those.
The "occasional" freebie? I don't think we're talking about the same service. That's not to say I agree with an early release being a PS+ thing, but they do offer a lot for what you pay.
The difference is that most Japanese studios do everything in-house, whereas studios like Bioware and Rocksteady essentially rent out a game engine to use as a base and work from there. Obviously having the entire framework for a game beforehand makes it quicker, but then again, that's also why Kojima's studio had the Fox engine developed. FFXIII-2 took so little time because the Crystal engine was already made. Having your own engine is can work both ways, because generally a game that has an engine specifically made and optimized for it will perform better than one that's using another engine, but if the studio doesn't know what they're doing necessarily, it will be disastrous.
The games look to be multiplayer focused. If it's down, you probably shouldn't be playing anyway. You probably won't pay for games, but instead there will likely be microtransactions. If everyone on Facebook had to /buy/ Farmville, no one would play it. On the contrary, they made a fortune on tractors and stuff like that that people spent their money on.
