The solution to that is a simple one. Console developers will simply have to become as savvy as PC developers at guarding the on-line portions of their games. They never should have expected a free pass on that in the first place.

Oh, don't get me wrong, Retro is full of generally angry characters. But the complaints against this project are totally understandable from an internal standpoint. The result of their cheesy little countdown was a 20 minute outage for the site and that was just from HTML hits. If they'd used the site to release an actual demo in that kind of fashion, it would have been totally catastrophic. Of course, people would be less pissed off in that case since that wouldn't have reminded everyone of SEGA's own nonsense with Sonic 4.

Oh, the people at Sonic Retro aren't really that hard to please. It's just that they started this as a community project and it's turned into a smaller group that isn't using much of the assets made for it. Also, they said there was going to be a demo and then pulled a Sonic 4 style trailer at the last minute. It was a bit of a troll.

I think there are already enough relevant degrees that command some actual respect (Computer Science, Business/Management, etc.) that will prepare you more for that sort of work that you'd be an absolute fool to enroll in something as specialized as a game development university or degree program that isn't merely an emphasis on something more universal (such as Computer Science).

This isn't a vocational trade, so stop treating it like one.

Your falacy then is that you are saying that you completely lack power, as a race. There isn't a single person on the face of the planet who lacks power. Thomas Hobbes states that in the Leviathan, if any person wants to take out any other person in a state of nature, he can do so. In fact, even with all of our societal protections, the general case is that if someone is willing to throw everything they have away, they can kill just about any other person, possibly excluding someone who is so cautious that they monitor every location they visit perfectly to a proximity of 1 kilometer. We all have power. We also all have the power to get vocal or do something positive. The only question is whether or not we exercise that power.

See, these arguments don't work for the same reason you can call a Southern Redneck a racist. The only power they have is the power to get other racists to act like criminals with them. Being white doesn't intrinsically instill them with some kind of magical ability to shit on black people from a thousand miles in the air.

I'm surprised I'm not seeing more people mention how obviously purjured these statistics are. 9% black main characters? 1.7% Asian? Holy crap, either they picked a deliberately loaded sample, or they really just pulled it out of their ass. Black is waaaaaaay too high. In fact, the only games I've played in my life where your primary character was black were GTA:SA and Vice City Stories. Excluding Fifty Cent Bullet Proof, I can't even think of more than a couple others.

The number of Asian main characters though? Any SMT game, about 20-30% of other Eastern RPGs (even if they are ambiguous about it rather often), Okami (cheating a little, but there is no doubt that Amaterasu is Asian), Ninja Gaiden, Tenchu, just about any and all games about Samurai or Ninja really (and there are a good number), Mirror's Edge, holy crap, believe you me I could go on all day.

So this really leaves me wondering if they are limiting their sample set to western produced games with a large focus on shooting people...

They are obviously going to lose this battle. Network gaming, in real time, has been around since the mainframe.

Whats the deal with everyone who is saying anything about Source engine getting down voted? I mean seriously, the first Source games came out almost five years ago. It really is about time they started thinking about putting it to rest.

Don't get me wrong, the stuff they make with it is still spectacular... but it isn't because of the engine any more. Now it's just a fight the artists have against the technology. I'm ready to see the next horizon.

Hey, here's an idea, let's just not buy the damn game! It's hard for raised prices to have much impact if no one takes the bait.

And really, woo, Modern Warfare 2. Looks the same as the other one to me.

I can't believe no one likened it to the Aperture Science Enrichment Center.
