It's quite simple, actually Tom. SWTOR is the only true contender to WoW in terms of quality. Rift was so-so, and that was the only other so-called 'AAA' MMO title on the market.
So it only makes sense to make a comparison against the two. I play both, so I can definitely see why. There are advantages and disadvantages to both. Having played WoW for 7 years, I can say it's refreshing to play SWTOR. But I am a big fan of Bioware games, and the quality is very good. I feel more connected to the stories and characters in SWTOR, simply because the format is more personable. Star Wars has a deep history, not just in the movies, but in the hundreds of books published since the 70's.
Some will say WoW has lots of lore. Maybe, but nowhere near the amount that Star Wars has built. And that's ok, WoW has kept my interest for a long time. I just feel I need to break away and play with a new toy for now.
I drive an older car back and forth to work. Nothing truly exciting. But I like to pretend I am in an F1 race car, which subsequently has piled up a few speeding tickets :(
People complaining about 'repetitive' or 'boring' questing; tell me one other MMO that is any different. ALL MMO's are the same thing - kill these mobs, loot these objects, etc. What sets this game apart is the story built around it. If you are skipping dialogue, you are wasting your time playing this game.
If you can't be bothered to listen to the stories, then go play a mindless drone of a game like WoW; pick up your free loot with zero effort from raid finder.
@TheChezDispenser What's Call of Duty? Is it that game where you have immense battles with Tanks, Helicopters and Jets across expansive masses of land in epic awesomeness?
@NinjaJesus They are just riding this pooptrain as far as it will go. Nobody wants to have to buy tons of peripherals when the kinect does it all with just one.
