I think it is funny how when it comes to something so simple minded, requiring little complexity to understand (such as an app marketplace), we rally for the openness and freedom to chose as we wish as long as it can be controlled by the end user (through filtration), yet when it comes to our freedom in our lives, we are okay to give freedoms up because of that double edged sword it carries.
Yeah, I have to say this is pure speculation. Everyone I know at Microsoft loves Balmer. Remember, it's like a presidency. A president is not responsible for much of the faults during his time as president, but the one prior... there's a time lapse, a delay for effects. Balmer's success will show in coming years. Vista wasn't his prerogative, 7 was. Windows Mobile wasn't his prerogative, Windows Phone 7 was.
Jobs: "So company, lets start making cases for our iphone" Company: "How can we make people buy it? You know, besides that its from us?" Jobs: "Lets make the phone not work unless they DO buy them" Company: "Genius!"
All I know is I love the Zune software and Hardware (HD only) much better than the Ipod (touch version in iPhone). Its more creative than the Ipod software/firmware and more intuitive. Some people can't pick it up very quickly but once any of the people I know who have tried it can not go back to the ipods ways. If a phone can do the same, then bring it on!
I hate my iPhone. I loved it at first, but I like change! The OS has stayed the same since the beginning! I hate the App Icons and iOS4 should have changed this! I won't buy the new phone for just the awesome hardware. Microsoft has won me back with the Windows Phone 7
I am torn over whether I would use Copy & Paste on the new OS because I do not know what features it will have to null the necessity of the feature. For instance, I use copy and paste for SMS on the iPhone because I can't take an SMS sent by me to one person and now send it to someone else, or even a full SMS conversation. Or if I need to send the SMS to more than 9 people, I have to copy the message and send a separate bulk SMS for the remaining receivers. If the WP7S allows me to do these functions without the need to Copy & Paste, then not only will I not need to use that feature, but the feature to "forward" or allow for more than 9 senders will just save me (if but small amounts of) time and therefore be more efficient than what the iPhone provides a the current time. There are other things I use C&P on the iPhone but I have only really done them once each situation and I think that if WP7S is intuitive, then C&P will be unnecessary and less efficient. But still, I loved editing and writing documents on my old iPAQ..... What if a keyboard attachment that would be required for large edits of text (like they used to have for palm pilot and WM back in the day could have some RAM on the board itself and Copy and Paste would be handled in the keyboard attachment for the phones....? Could work?
