@TheShaper I'll just say this: nothing makes a joke funnier than explaining it.

Microsoft to spend a billion marketing Windows Phone 7 and Kinect

Oct 18th 2010 7:38PM (Joystiq)
And absolutely no amount of marketing will make me want to buy the Kinect- mostly because like most gamers I'm a sucker who doesn't need mere marketing to squander hard earned cash on frivolities.

WSJ: Google 'agonizing' over user privacy, 'vision document' suggests selling data

@paul34

I don't believed that I adopted an anti-business stance- I just happen to have a philosophical issue with the sheer amount of greed among people who already have everything. I understand that the counterpoint to that issue is "how do you think they got that way in the first place", but they just don't need to sell us out to grow their business. They don't have to. They just want to. While I'm not going to do anything hasty like switch to Bing, I will remain open to other options and remind myself that I'm not necessarily a human to them as I am a dollar sign.

WSJ: Google 'agonizing' over user privacy, 'vision document' suggests selling data

What amazes me is not the fact that the allure of billions of dollars could cause a person to make some morally hazardous shortcuts, but that it tempts those who *already have billions of dollars!!!* How much more money do these people need? Isn't the goodwill that comes from wearing the White Hat worth something that their amoral counterparts don't have? While I am amazed, I am not surprised.

Slingbox account server problems cutting off web players, apps

Aug 7th 2010 3:49PM (Engadget)
Strangely enough, this is good news. Everything was working great before I left for vacation, now that I'm a thousand miles away it seems to have crapped out. At first I thought it was that my system needed to be reset, now I find it's on their end. This gives me hope that the problem will be resolved so I can watch my own crappy t.v. at my in-laws. Hopefully this isn't an omen of things to come r.e. my Sling experience...

Entelligence: 3D TV falls flat for me

Jul 26th 2010 11:19AM (Engadget)
@jmactacular

Not only is not having enough glasses a problem, but there's an even larger issue: I, and my children, break shit. I have no idea what the build quality of these glasses will be, but something tells me that they will build them as cheaply as possible and charge as much money as they possibly can for them, which leads me to believe that they will be crushed under foot, under ass, and in the layers of my couch. When 3D is ready sans glasses and the sets offer a credible leap over the 1080 my sets already do, then it will be viable for me.

@Pearl Jam Actually, I don't see the having enough glasses point people pose as being a problem. For every movie you, your family, and your friends see at the movie theater in 3D, you are given a pair of glasses, and if you like, you can bring them home. I've seen 2 movies in 3D now, and now, I have at home, 2 pairs of glasses sitting by my TV, ready for anyone to use in the future. Over time, the collection of glasses will accumulate. As far as the rest of the arguments, you could make all the same arguments for HD.

Nintendo's Fils-Aime promises 'commitment' to improve online experience

Jun 23rd 2010 10:16PM (Joystiq)
"Innovate"? Seriously? As an owner of all three consoles I believe I can fairly criticize Nintendo's half-baked, practically useless online experience as perhaps the weakest link in their system. Yes, the graphics aren't as good, but there's no arguing that their AAA titles equal or best anything that Sony or Microsoft has to offer. That said, everything they do is instantly downgraded because I cannot easily play with and talk to my friends while playing. I have literally spent HUNDREDS of hours on Xbox Live playing multiplayer games of all stripes, hours that i sure have shit could have spent playing New Super Mario Bros or any one of number of multiplayer games on the Wii with my friends had they not gimped and crippled the experience. Oftentimes I think that "innovation" is merely an excuse for spending time and money to give us what we want. As long as Miyamoto and EAD keep making awesome first party titles I will always be a Nintendo consumer, but the just don't understand that they could have had so much more of my time and money had they even made their system as usable as even PSN.
