Nintendo snubs gamers over 330 lbs.

May 30th 2008 11:59PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
You completely misunderstand the obese mind. If you're 150 pounds overweight, when you think of your "general health and well being" you see an insurmountable mountain - you have to lose all 150 of those pounds to be healthy. But it's the banality of "playing a video game" that makes Wii Fit's workout approachable. It's not about losing 150 pounds, it's about spending time doing something that's fun, which has the extra benefit of helping you lose weight, a small interval at a time.

It's REALLY hard to break the pattern of gaining weight and being ashamed of it, then becoming demoralized and discouraged, which causes you to make bad decisions which leads to more weight gain. And the more you gain, the harder it is to think about your general health and well-being, because 150 pounds is a LOT further away than, say, 20 pounds. But I can totally see why Wii Fit would make that more accessible to someone.

Wii Warm Up: The Subspace Emissary

Mar 15th 2008 1:39PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
I kinda liked it. I agree with what some people said about how it forces you to learn characters you normally wouldn't be interested in. I also agree with the poster who thought about how cool it would be for a new sidescrolling Metroid game using 3D graphics and a zero-suit Samus looking for her powersuit.

It's a good indication of how sidescrolling platformers still have a place. New Super Mario Bros. (a game which needs to be ported to Wii, it's so beautiful) is another example.

I actually enjoyed the Great Maze. It was super fun going through and trying to find every last door and nook and cranny. Once I got to the end I felt I'd earned it.

I would buy a sequel if it was on Wii Ware or something, but I'm not sure I'd shell out top dollar for a brand new disc.

Wii Warm Up: Wii Ware Warm Up

Tetris for sure, but I'm also just generally interested in any new and interesting cheap games that small developers put out that may be off the beaten path.

Wii Warm Up: What Brawl is missing?

Mar 13th 2008 5:20PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
A Tetris level.

Seriously! Imagine the awesome. Pieces you can climb on that are falling and making lines and disappearing. You'd have to avoid the falling pieces or else get smashed by them. Missed opportunity. You could even make it green and Game Boy-ish. There's already Tetris music in the game and they're willing to do a Game and Watch level, why not a level for one of the most important games in Nintendo history?

I made a Tetris level in the stage builder, which is how I got to thinking about all this.

Wii Warm Up: Who's your favorite Brawler?

Mar 11th 2008 1:38PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
I really like Pit. Good speed, balance, he can fly, and his specials and smashes are useful.

I also surprisingly like Peach. Her final smash is actually quite useful.

Zero Suit Samus is FAAAAAST.

Do Mario games need a better story?

Jan 5th 2008 8:45PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
I don't feel like Mario games need a story. What we need are fewer Mario games and some new IP where you can do whatever you want. A new Mario game should be like a major event that happens once in a blue moon. While it's true that SMG was an event release, Super Paper Mario and all the Mario appearances beforehand in Party, etc. dilute the brand.

Mario + story = Super Paper Mario, which kinda made me sick with all the sappy "Pure Heart" RPG garbage. I kinda felt the same way with Phantom Hourglass and that annoying fairy spirit that seemed oddly identical to the main Pixl in SPM.

Mario needs to appear less on Nintendo consoles so Mario appearances seem like real events. Zelda needs more complex storylines without resorting to sappy RPG cliche, because right now it's teetering on the edge. The only big franchise Nintendo has that has done story pretty well is Metroid, it seems.

Wii Warm Up: It just ain't what it used to be

Dec 23rd 2007 2:17PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
Gradius and Gradius 3. They're HARD! Even with the Konami code. Gradius is damn near unplayable. 3 is a little better.

Not a disappointment - Ice Hockey. Reliving the Cold War on the rink? Kickass.

Nintendo of Japan drops Famicom hardware support

Oct 21st 2007 8:50PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
That's not that crazy. Apple doesn't support OS9 systems anymore, nor do their new operating systems run on anything but 1GHZ G4's or higher.

It's pretty sad, but hey, that's progress. I'm sure there are plenty of places where you can get your NES repaired.

VC Monday Madness: Lost Levels and Sin & Punishment

Why would Nintendo release All Stars when they can make you pay for every individual purchase? Frankly I don't ever expect them to release it, so I might as well enjoy the originals.

Check out MySims moving in

Looks cute, but I liked it better when it was called Animal Crossing.

Seriously, can we get AC for the Wii?
