Sega celebrates 32X with soundtrack CD {Joystiq}

Mar 20th 2010 2:11AM I'm pretty sure that font/color/background combo is punishable by death in most civilized countries.

Mass Effect 2 'Alternate Appearance Pack' DLC adds new costumes {Joystiq}

Mar 19th 2010 5:48PM I'll have you know those costumes looked badass... in the 80s, when Devo wore them on tour.

Metareview: Metro 2033 {Joystiq}

Mar 19th 2010 4:40PM Those scores seem a bit generous... while I'm enjoying the game enough to keep playing, there's a few things worth mentioning for those thinking of buying vs renting.

Firstly, there is no AI to speak of, the enemies are borderline comatose in terms of cognitive response. The only real challenge here is putting enough bullets in an enemy before he puts more in you.

Second, attempting to break light bulbs even with a silenced weapon seems to set the guards on high alert, even if they aren't in the room. It's baffling, but it's happened repeatedly in multiple locations, so it's not an isolated bug.

Third, once enemies are on high alert, they seem to automatically know where you are even if you're crouched in shadows and they have neither flashlights nor night vision. Kind of kills the stealth aspect.

Arguably these are all AI issues, but they bear mentioning. That said, the setting, story, and overall design are very good, most of the voice acting is solid, and you get a sense of the metro communities each time you arrive at a new terminal. I'm becoming more and more interested in the English translation of the book as a result. There's also some fairly good moments of fear that don't revolve around something bursting out of a closet, but they tend to be sandwiched between lots of firefights.

Anyway, contrasting opinion. Your mileage may vary.

Mass Effect getting an ongoing comic book series {Joystiq}

That... looks pretty awful. Think I'll be avoiding this.

Majin and the Forsaken Trailer {Joystiq}

Mar 19th 2010 2:01AM Eh, since Majin is releasing before The Last Guardian, it's a pretty weak argument to say say the former is ripping off the latter, and I don't think Team ICO is the kind of studio that would go somewhere else for their ideas, so... pretty much just a coincidence. Unless the team behind Majin rushed the hell out of the title, which would be kind of pointless since there's not really a crowded gaming genre of "little kids hanging out with enormously destructive friendly monsters", so you might as well do it right.

Just sayin'.

Another World 15th anniversary edition now on GOG.com {Joystiq}

Mar 18th 2010 6:12PM Hah, I had this game when I was about 10 or 12, finished it in about three (brutally punishing) days, played through it about 10 more times after that. Just an incredible game for the time. I never did care for Heart of the Alien though, checked it out a few years back and I could barely get past the first 8 screens. Seemed a lot more punishing and finicky than the original for some reason.

God of War website teases 'Spartans Stand Tall' {Joystiq}

Mar 18th 2010 6:05PM I kind of hope it's over, because Kratos pretty much exhausted the world's supply of anything larger and more aggressive than a bunny rabbit over the course of the three titles (and I presume he killed some things on the PSP version). The ending of GoW3... well, it's too early to have that discussion, but if you've seen it and sat through the credits, you know what I'm talking about.

I wasn't that thrilled with the ending, personally. I'll leave it at that.

Metro 2033 patched for DLC support {Joystiq}

Mar 18th 2010 3:27PM If you want a valid reason to avoid the game, the AI seems like a good one. Aside from that, it's a decent title. But really, the AI... I don't even know what to say sometimes. This video points out a few "huh?" moments.

EA expecting two million subscribers for Star Wars: The Old Republic {Joystiq}

Mar 18th 2010 1:54PM Actually, Star Wars Galaxies was launched in June 2003 and didn't break the one million copies sold mark until August 2005. That "revamping" of the game really killed their momentum.

EA expecting two million subscribers for Star Wars: The Old Republic {Joystiq}

Mar 18th 2010 1:40PM Eh, it's Star Wars, it's Bioware... I don't see two million being a hard initial sale with EA's marketing team behind it. Now, keeping players subscribing past the first month, well that requires a bit more effort. I'll be checking it out with cautious optimism in hand.
