Old Grandma Hardcore plays Overlord (NSFW)

Aug 10th 2007 4:05PM (Joystiq)
She's not pressing or mashing buttons in this particular video because Overlord is not that sort of game. You select your minions via the RB button and then guide them with the right thumbstick; sweeping them to attack or avoid enemies. When enemies get close to you, THEN you press the A button to attack. Otherwise, you really wouldn't see such a thing here.

Just FYI ;)

Nintendo sends 100 elder-achievers DS Lites & Brain Age

Sorry, to clarify- that post was directed at "Dirk Dorkelson"; the first paragraph quoting him.

Nintendo sends 100 elder-achievers DS Lites & Brain Age

Jan 23rd 2007 6:28AM (Joystiq)
So let's see, to market the product to seniors, they give free DS Lites to people they see acting the least like seniors, then credit their own device (which these people presumably didn't have before they stood out for their nonseniorness) with being something that helps these people not act like seniors?

What do you consider "acting like a senior"? How do view older folks? Inactive luddites who shoo kids off their unkempt lawns?

Nintendo understands that BrainAge and video games in general are not panaceas by which people can miraculously cure dementia. They KNOW that. It would be irresponsible for them to portray it as such. So this marketing technique by Gollin Harris is clever in that it associates the DS Lite and BrainAge with those it finds to be the best examples of those who defy the stereotypes you may very well envision.

Just my two cents.

Today in Joystiq: January 2, 2007 [update 1]

Ross-

Yeah, Grandma hasn't gotten a Wii yet. The demand around here was pretty high and we had a pretty modest holiday (couldn't quite afford the new systems last month; insurance is always due in December... go figure) but she's get them eventually!

She sampled all the games for quite a while at E3 last year so she's curious as hell, but for now she's just cracking away at Twilight Princess on the GameCube. She's patient :)

Cheers,

-Tim

Old Grandma Hardcore is Nintendo's Grandparent of the Year

Alisha, what do you mean by "MAYBE" you should get your mom a DS? ;)

Nah, Grandma's no pro. She loves to game; absolutely LOVES to game, but she's only as good as the rest of us. That's why it surprised the hell out of everybody when she won! We had our crews there for MTV shooting The G-Hole, and some folks who had read the Reuters article about the event, just to watch, so whenever they would announce Grandma, everybody gave a huge cheer.

It was like a goddamn Disney movie :)

It's hard to update the site as much with work getting in the way. DS Fanboy, Joystiq, Kotaku, GoNintendo, man, ALL the sites Grandma and I check each day- it's impressive you guys update that often, even with multiple authors.

Old Grandma Hardcore is Nintendo's Grandparent of the Year

Alisha, honestly she didn't think she was going to win. Her first times in the practice rounds were something like 1 minute 25 seconds. When it came down to the last round, she won by only a couple seconds, the other lady, Ruth, was pretty good. Her final time was 32.2 seconds, I think.

She's giving the DS and most of the games to her daughter and grandkids.

In the picture you posted, I'm the ugly bastard on the right, and Grandma is cool as hell ;) She's awesome.

A tourney for the older folk

Aug 29th 2006 6:15PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
Grandma will be there, but not to compete. She already has a few DS's ;)

And dude, don't throw up in your mouth. You'll be old one day too.

Scaremongering and game-induced seizures

Jan 15th 2006 2:37AM (Joystiq)
Very well, Joystiq! I ACCEPT your challenge!!

"[...] sensitivity may be increased by 'alcohol consumption, sleep deprivation, and other forms of stress.'"

I will drink ENTERTAINING amounts of alochol, deprive myself of sleep, and somehow stress myself out (I think having someone scream at me every few hours "do something MEANINGFUL with your life, JACKASS!!" should do the trick, possibly a slap to the back of the head at random points) whilst playing the most dangerous seizure inducing games known to man all in the name of science.

My prediction- No clue. I'm curious myself! But at least I have a REASON now.

Xbox 360 sparks bomb scare

If it was me, that thing would be in a Pelican hard case with fitted foam inserts and a pressure valve for high altitudes along with some innocuous label on the outside like "Used Condoms" or "187 Ride or Die Demo CDs."

Then again... I'm not that rich, so it would probably stay in its box completely sealed and obscured by yards and yards of tape.

But then they might think it was a human head.

And that shit's embarassing.

Merry Xmas to all, and to all a good night!
