@smidget I mentioned the betas because they weren't your run of the mill open betas that anybody can get into. They are closed betas that are invite only and you have to apply to. I'm in competition with hundreds to thousands of other people applying for entry and out of those people, I get in 8-9 times out of 10. Why? Because the actual list of games I've done shows that I'm a valuable member to have on the test.
You, and people on Joystiq might not believe it, but this goes on a resume that's gaming oriented. They don't want to see that I worked customer service or labor for Amazon. They want to know about your gaming background and what you've done. Those beta tests are a part of that.
For example, if you apply for Blizzard's GM position for WoW, you better damn well list that you were a player for years, what character/server you are from and show that you have a passion for the game and know what this game is all about. THAT is a part of your credentials whether people here think so or not.
@EIranzer That's quite an interesting method to sidestep the local's only issue. I can take that one step further by getting a Google Voice # in the desired state and then tie it to my iPhone here in AZ.
About the piracy statement. I actually buy all my games. Here's my steam collection: http://img848.imageshack.us/img848/667/gameswh.png I have other games outside of steam, such as WoW, SWTOR, LOL (with purchased champs and skins) and stuff on my PS3
I said that because I'm really at the edge here of not giving a crap about the industry anymore. I cannot respect the audience, the companies/game developers any more. It's just one bad business deal and cash grab to the next. Look at what Capcom does to their games. They make barebones games and sells them full price. Compare that with Soul Calibur series where they actually put useful features into their online and customization features for free right off the bat.
@chrisredfield31 Think about it. You spend money on a Nintendo 3DS, where does that money go? It goes to Japan. What's Japan going to spend on that comes back around to you? Nothing. Their jobs go to Japanese.
Think about Walmart. Every time you shop at Walmart, what is Walmart doing for your community? Everyone who works there is paid minimum wage while they make maximum profit and ship those profits down to Bentonville, AR.
@eat it All this has really made me think about what these companies do to give back to the community and in the end, I couldn't think of any way that they do. No company period does anything to give back to the community and that's exactly what's hurting America right now.
We have to fight and claw our way to the top and not even degrees will get you a job. Read about that, it's true. Meanwhile, they sell us products and we keep buying them and sending money AWAY from our home. Their home state is enriched by local jobs but we don't have anything in our own state except customer service and government jobs.
@Gnomicidal It's pretty easy to say all those things until you realize what it takes to get them. Like I said to 8bit, you don't really have any credibility unless you're actually in the industry as well. I'm not going to take advice from some random jerk online that tells me to do something reckless or else I'll never get it. I'll get there somehow, but in a safe way that is planned and well thought out (like sending my resume ahead of time and talking to HR).
You guys keep telling me how I'm actually not qualified for any of these positions. What happens if I go down there and get laughed off? GG. I wasted 8-10,000 dollars with no exit strategy. How is this smart or in any way viable? I've actually applied for Square-Enix before. They specifically said unless you are a local, don't bother sending your resume in. I sent one anyways. No game company relocates you unless you're a heavy lifter (ie: programmer, designer, graphics, etc)
@chrisredfield31 also let me add that my friend's sister is down there in Indianapolis, wants to come back down here but can't. She spent all that money and doesn't have an exit strategy. This is a bigger issue than 8bit is talking about. Requires a lot of strategizing, planning, money, etc that can't be solved talking on a forum. I'm not listening to 8bit because he doesn't really have any actual advice of worth. If I was to listen to Bobby Kotick's success story (and I actually have) I can take something from that because he had no problem telling everyone how he got successful.
@8bitartist how do you expect me to listen to you when 1. you're giving me canned answers. ANYBODY can tell someone to do that. This aint a movie. You're telling me to do something that costs upwards of 6-10,000 dollars, a big gamble, like this was nothin, no problem. It's easy to say all that but doing it is another story. My friend's sister did a move like that down to Indianapolis and she spent 6-8k but she had a support network while she was job hunting down there. I don't have that luxury. You don't have any credibility whatsoever. You won't even tell me what you do. I'm not listening to a word you say.
@kentuckyfried Unfortunately I don't have any friends that can help me out. So if I'm doing this, then that means I'm saving a years worth of wages to make the trip down there and stay there long enough to find a job in the industry. Not only that, I would have to quit my current job which is a big gamble in and of itself.
@8bitartist It DOES matter. If you were so successful then why do you keep dodging the question? If you were so successful then maybe I can follow your advice and be successful too. Anybody can say, save money, move here, move there, do this, do that. Nothing that you said is new to me. All I hear is a bunch of BS. You're sitting here trying to discredit me, claim that you are successful, then renege on your claim and say it doesn't matter. Come on man.
@8bitartist yeah you retreat to using sarcasm because you really cannot back anything up that you say. It's a clear sign that you are bs'ing everyone here. You're just saying that to try and put one over on me and that's not going to work.

Check out this QA position: http://us.blizzard.com/en-us/company/careers/posting.html?id=120000H
look at the very bottom. Apart from C++ and Bachelors Degree, I could actually fill out a workable resume for this position.
