Do Japanese RPGs need good stories?

Feb 16th 2012 4:17AM (Joystiq)
I believe you came close to what is needed most but didn't quite get there and that is the characters. The world it's set in and the conflict that they are facing will often be just another shade of gray but it's the characters that are most memorable and what you will draw you into a game.
If you care about the protagonist and their party or feel some level of affection for them then you are much more likely to want to find out where their story takes them. In much the same way the antagonist needs to have a strong presence, we remember Sephiroth because we are first introduced to how he is a bit of a bad-ass and our character aspires to be like him so when he becomes our enemy we are more emotionally invested. Whereas Kefka is so memorable because of just how low he will stoop to win at all costs.
Another great example is Suikoden 3, we get both sides of this with the domineering Luca Blight and then have our childhood friend Jowy end up on the opposite side.

If the characters are memorable and we feel like investing time in their stories it won't matter to us what world it's in or what their 'ultimate quest' is as we just enjoy traveling with them and seeing how they grow and change.

Syndicate trailer shows off Starbreeze's vision

Just what the market needed, another FPS with a Skrillex track on top of it. As a huge fan or the original (Persuadetron how I miss thee) and someone who doesn't enjoy FPS games I quite disappointed they decided to reboot in this direction but honestly can't say that I'm surprised.

If it still maintains many of the elements that made the original so fun and challenging I'll give it a go but I just feel it'll be too dissimilar being an FPS personally.

Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten review: A premise unchanged

So few games out there understand that OCD itch and strive for perfection that a select bunch of us gamers desire so pretty much all Nippon Ichi games are day 1 purchases for me.

New Assassin's Creed: Revelations trailer dubsteps into the light

*Sigh, so tired of hearing terrible Dubstep. It's a style that can be used to create both unique and beautiful music people, so just throwing every random ass sample and beat you find and increasing the bass until it's completely discernible.
Up until about 1:30 into the vid the song was fine and actually matched the gameplay on screen quite well, then it just turned too random for my taste.

WildStar is new MMO from Carbine Studios, NCsoft

@SpikeJX

This was my first impression too, the style of the world, the ship especially, a furry long eared lead character, broken immediately by splices of humor.
The combat scene though make me think of Trine, three distinct characters each with their own fighting style that look as though they'd compliment and supplement each other for fights and puzzles.
Depending on the gameplay though this could either be an entertaining game or a fun anime.

Disgaea 4, Atlier Totori and possibly DIablo 3 Beta coming in the not too distant future? I never liked seeing the sun anyway.

Now you did say game and not anime right? It just looks more suited to be an anime series rather than a DS game.

The biggest thing they need to do is start seriously head-hunting top engineers. They've been working on so many features that have been coming "soon" for a very long time that continually get knocked back because of stability issues.
They even patched in Co-op Vs AI but have yet to activate it because they are worried about it negatively affecting the stability of the game.
It's gone beyond tolerable that the constant engineer work needed to be done has delayed features to the extent it has.
