@Cleric: so true and so terrifying for a game like Rage - I'm almost excited for FPS's again!

Vampirism infects Skyrim

Sep 12th 2011 12:31PM (Joystiq)
i loved being a vampire in Oblivion but it was always strange to me that people you fed on did NOT also become vampires. I was really looking forward to turning whole towns into vampires but it never happened. I hope this will be possible in skyrim although i bet they prevented that on purpose.

Reggie: Nintendo not interested in 'the garage developer,' still likes indies (just don't mention the garage)

Mar 18th 2011 3:42PM (Joystiq)
maybe they're afraid that garage developers might actually make games for the peripherals that nintendo bait-and-switches us with like motionplus, the steering wheel, gamecube-to-gameboy connection, wii-to-ds connection, biosensor (where is that?), etc, etc, etc...

I feel like they keep playing the same practical joke on me and I keep falling for it! I know, shame on me.

PlayStation Plus adding online game save storage March 10

Mar 9th 2011 1:49PM (Joystiq)
@PlatinumSkeet
but wait, you can put your save games on a memory stick and then put that on a new xbox to transfer. pretty easy actually you just need to transfer the licenses to play those games on the new xbox using the MS website.

i only see the benefit of cloud saves for when your console crashes or you want to upgrade your HDD, etc. I have an old ps3 fat with an 80gb drive and I'm not running out of space because of game saves, they're not that big.

it's a cool service but I just don't see it as much of an add for the plus service. I still need to see something actually compelling for me to join up. also, I don't consider a game free if I need to keep paying every month otherwise it disappears, that's called a rental.

Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword gameplay shown to GDC attendees

@VeeDeeVee

hmm let's think why you might not be thrilled yet....

- crappy waggle crow-barred in: check!
- imprecise directional slashes forced upon you: check!
- constant calibration of motionplus: check!

it's zelda, but now with 50% more gimmick!

i was a sucker and got motionplus because I thought ninty would, you know, actually release games for it. the few games that are out are just as finicky and imprecise as before except now you need to calibrate it every 5mins.

iPad 2 to feature HDMI output

Mar 2nd 2011 5:49PM (Joystiq)
@Courtney

so you're paying less than $5 per hdmi cable and less than $2 per usb cable? even if it's 50% cheaper on ebay, I'll pay the extra buck to not deal with shady ebay sellers and the horrible, overpriced shipping. monoprice FTW!

iPad 2 to feature HDMI output

it's not a cable, it is an adapter for a proprietary jack that apple is forcing on you. I can't believe everyone is thrilled that steve jobs is letting you pay $40 for functionality it should already have! but he's not letting you, he's forcing you through proprietary manipulation! it's weasel's move.

steve jobs rules with an iron turtle neck!

Sound off: New Xbox 360 Dashboard

Nov 4th 2010 1:43PM (Joystiq)
>> white squarishness is a bit stark after getting used to muted colors and rounded edges,

not for me... that white is blisteringly bright if you have a large TV. I won't be getting used to it unless i wear sunglasses at night.

could care less about square or round edges.

and why no option to have the pop-up menu system as default. I don't need big pictures and fonts and the pop-up menu is easily 2x faster than the default UI.

Sound off: New Xbox 360 Dashboard

i hate the new interface. I have a giant TV and all that white is really harsh in a dark room. they removed ALL customization options when they went from old xbox to xbox 360 - there weren't many customization options before but you could at least choose between a light and dark menu system. I love my xbox but it seems to me MS took away customization in order to force people to buy stuff like useless avatard crap.

I also hate that they block half of your background for absolutely no reason. before this update, the menus were 3d-ish and that white section of the background became a kind of 3d floor that the menus slid across. now that the menus are 2d, the white "floor" is just dumb. I suspect they changed the menus from 3d to 2d because of kinect - trying to "swipe" through menus in isometric perspective is more confusing than simple 2d swiping.

the sequential menu system is horrible to begin with but it's not new.

i wasn't a huge fan of the previous dashboard but this one is a step back, IMHO, unless you are getting a kinect. MS is really phoning the innovation in....

Get a clue: Official PS3 sound bar designed to enhance game dialog

Oct 13th 2010 1:23PM (Joystiq)
I have a 7.1 surround system although I am only using it as a 5.1 currently. However, my center speaker is just one i had lying around and is not the same as my other speakers. sometimes I have trouble hearing dialog in movies and games and if i turn up the volume to hear them, it's super loud once the music kicks back in - constant volume adjustments. a center speaker that will match my other will cost about $120 and is just 1 speaker.

I'm wondering if I could use this soundbar as a center speaker for my existing 5.1. obviously I would not want my center speaker to be stereo or to produce a surround sound-like effect. So I'm wondering if it can be changed to be mono and no surround sound but still keep the dialog boosting effect.

I also wonder how goo the dialog boosting effect is - I have a pretty good receiver and it has a 'midnight' mode (actually a few levels of it) which is supposed to do the same thing but when I turn it on and off, I barely notice a difference.
