The Schafer stigma: How his successful Kickstarter went to your head

Mar 2nd 2012 12:36AM (Joystiq)
@ItchyBarracuda
"...There is no REAL confirmation of how the money will be used, or where it will be allocated to (persons, etc). You could set up the most elaborate hoax and walk off a bloody millionaire. It's amazing to me people will throw money at stuff like this so blindly." -ItchyBarracuda

Fortunately, at least in the United States, fraud is considered a crime, and has serious legal consequences. It's unfortunate that such a possibility occurs on any level of financial transaction, but as always, your best judgment is the first line of defense against getting involved in any sort of criminal activity.

"Why the hell should anyone pay attention to the tens of thousands of people pouring into this site now essentially asking for the same thing under the same pretenses?"
"...I can understand raising money in a traditional way like community projects or meet and greets etc, but it is positively perplexing that anything without some kind of pre-established following (Schafer, Cipher Prime etc) expects ANYTHING to come of a page like this, let alone that anyone actually donates under these pretenses." -ItchyBarracuda

You seem to be operating under a strong assumption that people are too stupid to know what to do with their money. I think you'd be pleasantly surprised to find that most people tend to be fairly frugal when it boils down to their hard-earned cash.

I have backed exactly 1 project on Kickstarter after making the assessment that the people behind the project were trustworthy enough to follow through, and when the time came, I recieved precisely what I was promised.

It's true that sometimes some idiots don't know any better way to spend their money, and I understand your concern about creating an environment that increases the possibility of fraudulent activity, but while a person can advise his fellow man, it's not a person's duty to police his financial conduct.

East Is West: How Two Classic RPGs Prove the Stereotypes False

Feb 17th 2012 12:33PM (Joystiq)
This article is an example of a faulty generalization called "hasty generalization", one which utilizes "cherry picked" evidence (another type of logical fallacy).

You may have found a few good exceptions to the rule, but it ignores the multitude of evidence that goes against your opinion.

@StClair

Haha, that's precisely the same thing I was thinking. Any time someone mentions the in-game sections where the characters sit in chairs and narrate their adventures, it reminds me of Kare Kano's popsicle-stick ending.

@darkinchworm

Why would he buy games that he's not interested in, just because they're cheap?

Buying things that you have no interest in, but are "on sale" or seem cheap, doesn't make you a "smart" buyer; it makes you a compulsive one.

@Odog4ever

Why do you care that someone made a game about this?

Does it bother you that someone was motivated enough by their criticisms that they would actually make a commercial product to voice their concerns?

Making snarky comments about other people's efforts to make a difference doesn't elevate you in any way. It just makes you look like an asshole.

You ever have that friend who's an excellent artist, who has a great eye for detail, has good line weight, and great artistic balance and composition, but refused to make anything but weird, abstract shit or just drew furries?

Bethesda's a little like that friend.

Game Arts founder Takeshi Miyaji passes away at 45

I remember playing Grandia late into the night, running around town, listening to the janky tunes of Parm, in search of a true hero's armaments, instilled with pure sense of wonderment and adventure.

Rest well, Takeshi Miyaji. A true hero.

What a damn shame.

That is all.

@Ospov

That's fine. I don't like your first comment becuase its intentional belligerence does nothing but provoke a peurile response, but your other posts are alright because you spend your time articulating your argument (even if it is strained in its perspectives).

Less of the former and more of the latter, and I think we'll all get along just fine.
