Origin nets 4 million client installs, adding third-party content 'very soon'

Frankly, I have no issue with paying for a legit copy of a game and then downloading a pirated version of the game.
Both publisher and developer gets their money and I get a relatively hassle-free game, in regards to DRM (naturally, the main downside to any pirated content is trustworthiness of it's vendor and reliability of the end product). So long as I do not make illegal copies of the game, there should be no issue.

I feel this is better than merely stealing the game outright but it's highly likely publishers will still condemn this action for whatever reason. Quite possibly for the same reason Sony has some sort of vendetta against those who jailbreak their consoles for their own personal use and no one else's.

Touche, I'll give you that one. I find them better in regards to the "new IP market" than Activision but ultimately, they're still relying on sequels to some of their older, oversaturated titles.

@Enigma7ic

These "Steam babies" are the vocal minority. Remember that. Their voices do not make up the majority of Steam users. Remember that, too.

Not all of us who dislike Origin do so for irrational reasons. My reasons for disliking Origin are rather logical and rational, because I also hate Steam.

I hate Origin more-so because not only is it like Steam, but because EA's release of it was so badly timed that it looked like Origin's inception was merely a tool to boycott EA's use of Steam. Whilst this may not be the case, that is how it looks, especially since I can download EA titles in other places apart from Origin, so long as it isn't on Steam.

@AJL89

My argument in relation to this post is that 4 million installed clients doesn't prove that EA's new service is popular. It proves nothing more than that 4 million copies of their client were installed, but those numbers are inflated by one person installing the client on multiple PCs in his home or by uninstalling and installing the client repeatedly for whatever reason.

If you want my rational for disliking services like Steam and Origin then consider reading an article concerning the topic on my blog, as I'd rather not repeat what's already been written:

http://randomtastic.com/2011/07/forward-to-video-game-publishers-everywhere/

The TL;DR version is that whilst digital distribution on it's own is not a bad thing it's the fact that many publishers are now requiring you to use Steam to even install their games, let alone play them. EA is now doing the same thing with Origin.

How good or bad the client it is irrelevant, it's the inconvenience that comes with being forced to use one that is why I hate it.

Digital distribution, on it's own, is a good thing. The -option- to use Steam, Origin, GOG, D2D, etc, is a -good- thing. Being forced to install Steam to play my copies of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, FEAR 3, Dungeon Siege III (recent games I've acquired) is a -bad- thing.

My gripe isn't really with Origin itself but with the fact that EA are pretty much boycotting Steam. The way Origin was released just looked like a big "F U!" to Valve and Steam and it just didn't look good for EA.

Aside from this, I don't like Origin for the same reason I hate games requiring Steam to be installed. It's yet another bloated third-party program that gamers are required to install and run to play even one game. It shouldn't be necessary.

Digital distribution is a good service but not one that should be required. Nor should the software used to execute the distribution should be required.

Whilst I do want West and Zampella to win this case, I have no desire to purchase any new games they release under EA unless they prove that they're not the same old shit that they've been publishing under Activision for the past ~5 years.

EA themselves have also produced virtually the same crap for the same amount of time as Activision, so Respawn Entertainment will either need to shape up or ship out, because whilst there are still plenty of Modern Warfare fanboys, that'll only go so far until they've milked the cow dry.

Minecraft 1.8 update leaked by Mojang

Sep 9th 2011 9:03PM (Joystiq)
It's a pointless marketing gimmick. They're advertising the release as a "leak" when it clearly isn't.

A "leak" is when somebody within an organisation or group releases confidential information to the public with the knowledge or consent of the information's creator(s) and owner(s).

A "release" is when a group gives public access to information with the knowledge and consent of the information's creator(s) and owner(s), which is exactly what happened in this case.

Just because Origin has 4 million client installs doesn't mean it has "caught on".

How many of those 4 million people are using the client not because they want to, but because they have to to play future EA published titles?

How many of those 4 million people have installed the client only to realise they don't like it and then uninstalled it?

EA may have monitored how many people have installed their client, but that doesn't prove how popular their service is. It doesn't say anything other than the fact that they've had the client installed 4 million times. Who's to say it wasn't installed 1 million times each on 4 computers?

Deus Ex 'Missing Link' DLC gets a trailer, more details

@bwiancohen
Are you sure the voice actor changed and not just his voice?

There's no credit acknowledgement for two voice actors for Adam Jensen, and I highly doubt Eidos Montreal or Square Enix would bother to pay someone to speak one line of a character only to go back to the original actor again.

Deus Ex 'Missing Link' DLC gets a trailer, more details

Sep 8th 2011 9:42PM (Joystiq)
The DLC seems less about the overall storyline and more about character development.

If the DLC is set in the location most people think it is, then it's not exactly needed for story continuity, because it can be simply argued that the pod hid his GPL tracking frequency, possibly so nobody knew he was coming.

The DLC isn't necessary for the overall storyline but character development isn't necessarily a bad thing.
