Faced with Nerf or nothing, we choose Nerf

May 9th 2007 3:38PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
I really like the idea of this case, but not the execution. Sure, it'll protect the front corners, but the DS Lite's weak point (HIT FOR MASSIVE DAMAGE) is its hinge, which is just stickin' out there almost totally unprotected in this case.

I mean, what's the point in a protective case that doesn't protect the part of the gadget that needs the most protection?

DS Fanboy presents: Game Night 5/3/07 aftermath

I missed out this week, so POKEYMANS FOR SURE.
I don't have a headset yet, but how are we trading friend codes and all that nonsense?

How many Wii controllers will you buy?

Nov 18th 2006 1:34PM (Joystiq)
I agree with Abscissa - having Wii Play come with the controller bundles would make the purchase seem a lot more attractive. If I don't have an incentive like that I'll probably just buy a second Wiimote (and maybe nunchuck) and leave it at that until prices go down or 3rd party companies start making their own versions. $60/control set is a lot of money to drop.

Nintendo's new Zelda most certainly doesn't fall flat

Nov 12th 2006 7:15PM (Joystiq)
"I believe Vlad id correct in that the Wii's lack of power is taking away from immersion and hurting gaming."

This kind of argument really bothers me, because it makes the assumptions that the only games that can be enjoyed are the ones that are on the absolute cutting-edge of graphics. The original Xbox didn't have as good of graphics as the Xbox 360, but you were still able to enjoy games on it. The SNES didn't have as good of graphics as the GameCube, but SNES games were still enjoyable and considered to have amazing graphics for their time. Hell, a lot of people who read this site have emulators so that they can STILL play SNES games, even though they have "shitty graphics" compared to games today.

I was able to be totally immersed in games for the NES, SNES, and Xbox, and I plan on being able to be totally immersed in games for the Wii as well. Graphics alone aren't what makes a game immersive and engaging. It's a combination of things like gameplay, control, and a good story. YES, amazing graphics definitely help the experience, but they aren't the end-all in what makes a game good or bad.

Critiquing Nintendo's Wii launch details

Sep 14th 2006 5:16PM (Joystiq)
After finding all this out I've changed my mind about purchasing a Wii on launch day. I know it's the cheapest of the consoles and all, but a few games and 3 more controllers is going to drive this into the $500.00 range, and I'm not willing to put down that kind of an investment on a gaming machine until it's proven it's going to last.

Sorry Nintendo! I really wanted to be more thrilled about this!

Wii not supporting DVD playback

Sep 14th 2006 2:55PM (Joystiq)
"most adults aren't looking for a DVD in this generations consoles, becuase they have home theatre systems that blow away anything that comes by. "

NOPE. NOT EVEN CLOSE.
I'm 27 years old, have several college degrees, and I use the speakers that are built in to my TV. I use a crap DVD player I got for $40 at Target, and sometimes I still watch DVDs on my Xbox. ___NINTENDO F*CKED UP ON THIS ONE.___ Quit the fanboyism for a minute and admit it. People who aren't gamers will want to know what the Wii does that _ISN'T_ games, and all it does right now is let you surf the internet on TV (with crap resolution on most home TVs) and look at digital pictures. For a non-gamer the addition of DVD playback would make the console seem a lot more interesting, particularly if they already have a DVD player that they think is "too big" - Nintendo is being so secretive about their announcements because it's all disappointing.

The Wii may still be great, but it could have been so much more.

Wii not supporting DVD playback

Sep 14th 2006 1:56PM (Joystiq)
I'm excited about the Wii, but this is really disappointing. Sure, I have a DVD player, but I don't want to have to have a ton of boxes cluttering up my entertainment center, and I liked the idea of the Wii as a really sleek-looking, small-profile DVD player just as much as I did of it as a gaming system. As has been pointed out, when you have a TV-remote-like controller having DVD playing capabilities JUST MAKES SENSE. Unless the Wii is going to secretly support some other form of video playback this is a HUGE mistake on Nintendo's part.

StarCraft greatness: The perfect SCV Rush

Aug 7th 2006 11:54PM (Joystiq)
I hate to ruin everybody's fun, but there are obviously Terran Marines in the rush - hell you can even see them in the screencap posted here. It's still an amazing feat, but those SCVs had backup.

Suda 51 reveals Heroes (Wii) game trailer

Jul 24th 2006 3:34PM (Joystiq)
All I have to say about this is that the character models look like they were built out of Legos. Just because you're going with the cel shading look doesn't mean you get to make horrifyingly inaccurate character models.

This looks worse than XIII for the Xbox, and that's a pretty old game. I'm excited about the Wii, but the character models in both this and Red Steel look so bad it's making me nervous.

Mac & Nintendo: So happy together

Jul 18th 2006 2:48PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
If you use an Apple Airport Express as your WAP you won't need to do any setup at all. I've been using an Airport Express for wireless for my Powerbook, and the DS automatically recognized it. I did zero setup and I've had absolutely no problems.
