I bought my original XBox1 after playing Halo at a friend of mine's.
The XBox was decidedly better than the PS2, and even though there weren't as many good games, there was Halo which just kicked butt.
Now, the 360 comes out a year _before_ the PS3, (and it looks only invetitable that the PS3 will be at least a little bit better hardware), and the 360 doesn't have any killer apps for it yet. And to top it off, the best looking -to be released- apps for the 360 are PC games (Gears of War, Oblivion, CoD2). I already own a PC, so why would I buy a 360?
I won't. This is one XBox fan that's hoping PS3 or Revolution don't disappoint..
3 years from now 360 will be lucky to have the success of the original Xbox. Think about it... the XBox1 succeeded because of superior hardware and a killer launch title. Now the hardware advantage is gone (or worse), and the best titles coming aren't even exclusives.
The sales are so weak because here they've sold 1.5 million WORLDWIDE, whereas they had sold 1.4 million XBox1 in the US alone last time.
For comparison, the PS2 sold a million in both japan as well as in US on it's first WEEKEND there.
The big thing with rushing the console to market was to get a big headstart on sales, and basically there global sales so far could be eclipsed by a PS3's week-long sales in a single country.
That's why it's so bad. Ignore the facts and the industry analysis if it makes you feel better though.
Well, abysmal sales so far, but this isn't the real test. Clearly they'd sell more if there more on the shelves (although just this week I've seen them at both a Toys R Us and a Walmart).
So we won't really know until a few more months have past.
Yeah it's a blast for about 5 minutes, but doesn't come close to the polish and long-term fun of Burnout.
Also, not to complain, but it's basically current-gen graphics at a higher resolution. A bit more physics, a bit more particles, but nothing impressive.
There's no 360 pressure because Microsoft's only been able to manufacture trivial amounts. (600,000 in almost 2 months is a miniscule quantity. PS2 outsold that in 2 days both in japan and in US. Dreamcast outsold that within a week and a half, as did the XBox 1.0).
PS2 is a cash cow on software, and amazingly the console is still selling strong. That's the primary reason to keep quiet about PS2. Note how XBOX1 sales have plunged since 360's release.
The other thing is that it's a lot more impressive to have a big demo with lots to show, instead of releasing a short demo here and another there.
But we won't have to wait much longer... Playstation Conference in February should be the event.
Honestly, I really think Microsoft had it right the first time -- Launch about a year later than the competition so that you can at least have the better hardware. This attracts a certain crowd and gave the XBox a sort of 'elite' status, even if there weren't as many quality titles released. At least the best Xbox games were great, and cross-platform games were better on the 'box.
This time around it's the opposite situation, so 360 buyers will not only have very limited Japanese developer support, they'll be the ones getting the lesser of the two systems when hardware is compared.
I think that even for Microsoft's next attempt (720?) this will be a mistake, as Xbox will have lost it's 'superior' branding.
Everyone console needs Japan -- its home to ~30% of the purchasing power and perhaps half the developers. Without it you're guaranteed a second (or worse) spot.
