PS3 music playback is customizable, but limited

Nov 11th 2006 9:04AM (Joystiq)
I almost always stream music from my PC playing games online. The in-game music in multiplayer or Arcade games get a little repetitive now and again.

Hell, I even have playlists for FPS games, racing games, etc.

DIY Machinima in Halo 3

The point is, Spartans DON'T create rings. The flood don't. The Covenant don't.

You obviously HAVEN'T played the single player if you think they did :p

Phantasy Star's universal issues

Worked for me, no issues. Didn't like the game (just felt like it was on the Dreamcast), but it totally worked.

Sony still hasn't delivered online specs to PS3 developers?

Sep 25th 2006 8:24PM (Joystiq)
The irony of the fan response is pretty thick for me. When Sony first announced the PSN, all the fanboys claimed it'd obviously be ready for launch since Sony had been working on it for "years and years" and already ran many of the most popular MMO's out there.

Both of which are probably true.

However Xbox fans said it wasn't as easy as just slapping some servers up and hoping everything went well.

It was always my belief that Xbox Live is a harder service than people gave it credit for. While this news isn't necessarily accurate, and we won't know how good PSN is until it launches, saying "it took the Xbox months to get Live" is disingenious.

The Xbox didn't launch having touted Live for a year. Didn't commit to games being Live-ready at launch. Didn't say it would "kill" some competitor's Live-like product.

Microsoft *created* the Live-like industry. The expectation is now set, both from developers and from users. Online play is a requirement. And Sony simply isn't delivering at this time.

I'm not sure this will have a major immediate impact, as they'll still sell out of consoles. But I do see this as yet another reason for devs to not fully support Sony (to the extent they did with the PS2). And that is the kind of thing that could hurt the PS3 this generation more than anything else.

But, I'm willing to wait and see how good PSN actually is :)

Except it's too damn small :p Where's the big monitor love?!

Joystiq hands-on: Lost Planet multiplayer (Xbox 360)

Sep 23rd 2006 10:51AM (Joystiq)
Fine, I'll feed the troll.

1. More games: by the time the PS3 comes out, there'll be more than 100 360 games available.

2. Better games: Sure, some of the games in the PS3 launch window look great, but expect that for the first 6-12 months after its release, the 360'll have the better lineup. Who knows after that, but right now both consoles have fairly firm lineups for the next year.

3. Xbox Live: Every game, full integration, always on. Plus it's totally stable. The number of "online" games for the 360 by the time the PS3 launches'll be somewhere between 40-50. The number by the time the PS3 launches'll be somewhere between 5-10.

4. XBLA: Whether you love or hate microtransactions, more than 50 games available for cheap, for your girlfriend / sister / kids / wife / mom is a great little thing. Plus, it's a nice distraction when you reach that "frustration point" in a full game.

5. Rumble: Sure, I said it. I've played the PS3. On racing games the lack of rumble was really noticeable.

6. Price: It's only about 70-100$ more expensive than the Wii. And it's more than 100$ cheaper than the PS3. Controllers are cheaper, many games are cheaper. All in all, you get a great package for an "okay" price.

7. Connectivity: Until you've streamed movies and pictures from your PC or used the 360 as a DVR you really don't understand the full power of the box. You think the PS3's a cheap BR player? I think the 360 is a stupidly cheap DVR.

8. Versatility: Plug in my iPod, it plays my music. Plug in my thumb drive, see my pictures. Plug in a decent number of peripherals. It just works. I can't believe Microsoft made something so easy to use, to be honest.

9. Demos: Nuff said.

10. Upgrades: We already had one dashboard upgrade, which was fairly substantial all in all (as many features as an Apple OS X upgrade). We'll have another very, very soon (likely before the PS3 launch). I'm sure the PS3 "sideboard" (or whatever) will be nice, but it'll also be a fair bit behind the 360.

That said, I'm sure I could come up with 10 reasons why the Wii and PS3 rock as well. The reality is that, to me, each system has its own strengths and weaknesses. If you love the PS3, then buy it. It doesn't make you an idiot or a fanboy. It makes you passionate. And if you have fun *gaming* with your system, then it's a success for you.

Me, I've been gaming with my 360 for 8 months now, and I've loved it. It was more than I'd ever spent on a system before, but it is generations better than my Xbox or PS2.

I can only hope you have the same satisfaction with your PS3. If you do, then we were both right ;-)

The economics of Live Arcade development

Sep 21st 2006 1:46PM (Joystiq)
Didn't Moore say it was an 80% cut? Also, the Marble Blast example is poor, since this was a Windows game first. So this was just a port. I don't care who you are, a port of an indie game make you 1M$ isn't bad.

Finally! Assassin's Creed confirmed for 360 [update 1]

Sep 1st 2006 9:32AM (Joystiq)
I still crave Lair... Not enough to buy a 600$ console, but I really do crave Lair... That and Warhawk are the only games on the PS3 (besides Creed) that excited me.

I won't buy a console for 2 games though.

Rayman not Wii-exclusive, what's Ubisoft up to?

Aug 31st 2006 8:30PM (Joystiq)
Thank you God! This was the *only* game on the Wii that's excited me at all, and now I don't need to buy another console just for one game :-D

No online support for 3rd-party Wii devs until 2007

Aug 25th 2006 1:21PM (Joystiq)
I won't be buying a Wii then until online. It diminishes the value of a game to not be able to play it online. The irony of releasing Blazing Angels, a 1 year old 360 game, with *less* features for the Wii is astounding. If all you get with BA is the single-player, there's really only about 6 hours of play there. It was the online play that added any value at all to the experiene (since even the single player wasn't that great).
