Sep 23rd 2006 10:29PM (Engadget HD)Wii impressions: Metroid Prime 3
May 10th 2006 9:59PM (Joystiq)But at least it was an exploration/adventure game. Not only is there more interaction with other talking characters, but the game is completely focused on FPS aspects. I'd like to see periods of time where gunplay is heavy and it acts more like a FPS, but in between those gun battles, there is more exploration and backtracking and finding hidden power ups like in the past Metroid games.
And in terms of appearance, the environments look more like the ones from Metroid Prime 2, which I didn't much like because everything looked so much alike (or at least compared to the varied areas of previous Metroid games). Graphics are good, but I don't want the entire game to just be some space station where talk to and work together with Galactic Federation guys.
Overall, this game looks more like a mix between Metroid Prime 2 and Metroid Prime Hunters, the latter of which I wouldn't even call a Metroid game as it has very little gameplay elements that exist in the classic Metroid formula. I was really hopeing for a Super Metroid/Metroid Prime game with a bigger emphasis on shooting. But it looks like Retro is going to throw out the classic and still fresh and unbroken Metroid gameplay formula and replace it with the overused, stale FPS gameplay formula.
I hope the final product is a lot different, and that the demo theyre showing off is just an action packed intro, soon to be followed by a more slow paced, exploration driven adventure through many various locales that each have their own unique look, feel, enemies, and boss.
If they don't do that, I'll have to rely on the classic Metroids (Zero Mission and back) for that perfect blend of gameplay style, and Metroid Dread if its ever found to be real.
Nintendo briefing: featured first-party Wii games [update 1]
May 9th 2006 9:39PM (Joystiq)And no Smash Bros makes me very disappointed, Smash Bros Wii made up about 30% of my E306 hype.
E3: The Gears of War mural [update 1]
May 7th 2006 9:45PM (Joystiq)I remember seeing gamespot's pictures taken right before the doors opened to E3 on day 1, Ubisoft had just finished their Ghost Recon booth about 10 minutes before the show began. And this thing isnt even expected to be done until the second day.
Airports vending GBA, PSP portables
May 7th 2006 9:38PM (Joystiq)And enjoy E3 and congradulations on the safe flight there. Someday in the not-so-distant future, I will be experiencing the same thing, only it'll be the E3 that ushers in the next-next gen after the Wii, PS3, and long forgotten 360. And everybody will be expecting Apple's new system to completely shut Microsoft out of the home console market for good.
Enjoy your E3 experience. It must be quite a wild ride. And as a request, if you do end up reading this Mr Miller, could you please make a list of the sections of the Kodak Theatre Nintendo has made (such as Hyrule and the Mushroom Kingdom)?
Free expression isn't always a good thing
May 2nd 2006 3:58PM (Joystiq)gamer, or of gamers in general"
I really don't see how that emblem reflects on his maturity. If somebody chooses to have the Nazi
flag as his emblem, that doesnt automatically classify them as immature.
I, personally, am fascinated by the Nazi war
machine, Nazi propoganda and the methods they used to get so many people to believe such outrageous lies, and how one poor, miserable child grew up to be one of History's most recognizable figures and how Hitler changed the course of history. I couldn't think of
anything else to put as my emblem, so I put the Nazi flag as it. So does that make me immature?
I know that flag represents a lot, but to automatically assume things about a person for having that as a simple little emblem or to even hate someone for doing that shows that you are a VERY closed minded person.
I like joystiq because of how usually open minded they are. They're not like most other video game websites where theyre clearly biased towards one
company or system, even though they may claim not to be. Joystiq usually states things in a matter-of-fact way, and if they do give their opinions, they usually take a minute to show the other side of it.
But this particular article, I find to be very closed
minded. You clearly don't know that person, so how can you immediately tell that he's immature? Or do you just assume he is because you don't agree with him? I always try to see things from somebody elses perspective, the last thing I would ever want to be is closed minded. I don't immediately label people just because of one simple little thing. The only times I ever judge a person is when I know them well enough where I can tell what kind of person they are.
If you're going to immediately label this random person as immature because, by exercising his right to free speech and opinion, it disagrees with how you feel, then you should first think of all the things you do that closed-minded people could label you for doing. Possibly your religion, your race, your political stance, your hair, your clothes, any thing like that, people who don't have the same opinion or preference on could immediately label you something that isn't true. I'm not saying you have to agree with a person, but before making closed-minded judgements, you SHOULD really try and see things from someone else's stance, and dont be so prejudice. Shame on Jennie Lees for writing this article, and lowering my respect for joystiq.
Real people speak out about Wii [Update 1]
Apr 29th 2006 9:22AM (Joystiq)The only people this new name is making a splash in are the people who already know all about the Revolution and are dissappointed in its new name. The mainstream still doesnt know what the Wii is, let alone the Revolution.
The mainstream audience is so stupid that they'll take one look at the name and call it off as something for children thats too simple for them. It won't be until it gains in popularity that they'll consider buying one.
But if you ask them what the 360 or PS3 are, and they'll tell you that the 360 is "The greatest video game system ever made" and that the ps3 "Is gonna be like as powerful as a supercomputer but cost like 500$". The mainstream audience is notorious for being so f*cking stupid and fickle and being sheeps. They don't like new and different products, they like extensions of products that they already like. This is where the majority of PS2 sales came from (that, and people going out to buy a new one because theirs broke but theyve still got all these games just sitting around). The iPod didnt really kick off and become a phenomenon until about 2 and a half years ago. The mainstream had no idea what it was and could care less until it began making headlines and began being part of everyday conversation and life. Then theyve immediately got to go out and get one.
Back to the Revolution. So anyways, this name change only affects people who already know and want a Revolution. After E3, though, if the Revolution is revolutionary enough to steal the show like so many expect it to (high expectations rarely end well), then the magazines and probably a few news stories will be filled with how amazing and truly "Next Generation" the revolution is. And because its now called the Wii, all these reports and stories and articles will be refering to it as the wii, kinda giving the name a good place in people's minds.
But as for now, I doubt Nintendo expected this much hatred of the name, but at least its all coming from the hardcore audience, the audience that are well educated and informed on the video game market, so a simple name change isnt going to make them not buy the system.
And for my two cents, I see what Nintendo is doing with the name and I kinda like it, how theyre trying to make it a buzzword like iPod and google and napster and yahoo, but the mistake they made is this simple: Wii is only one syllable. I can promise you, had they made the name 2 or 3 syllables, it would be more catchy and people would like it more, but one syllable just doesnt catch on.
