To reiterate, I do not believe this deal is about refurbished PS3s. I just wanted to save kmcroc a little face, because mywhitenoise took a little swipe, acting like BB has never sold refurbished consoles, and I know that they do.
And now he's in the blue, and I'm looking like an idiot for continuing this thread. Sorry everyone.
Oh, no, I didn't mean to imply that they sneak refurbished consoles in with the new ones or anything. Those friends knew that they were buying refurbished consoles; they just didn't know that the warranty had been voided by the process.
I was just informing mywhitenoise that Best Buy does, in fact, sell refurbished consoles. Again, I don't think this deal involves refurbished PS3s.
@mywhitenoise Well, I can't give you a precise date, but I know at least two people who have purchased refurbished 360s from Best Buy. I remember because they both regretted it, when they discovered that the refurbishers had voided the warranty and their consoles didn't qualify for free red-ring or e74 repairs--so it's been at least a year or two.
Best Buy definitely still sells refurbished consoles. I don't expect this deal is for refurbished PS3s, though.
@TheOtherJames If you compare battles vs. plays in a game mattering, I think it's important to remember that every play in a game *can* matter; there is always that potential for a big play. Whereas, the vast majority of battles in any JRPG I've ever played never even had the potential for relevance--they were just there to pad my XP, and I knew it.
Sure, if you look back at the average play in a game, it may not seem important, but that's not the mentality those teams had going into it, and I'd love for all battles to feel as fresh and significant.
@Oddgirl Strange that Sony would endorse what is essentially piracy. If I buy a physical game, my friends can't go download that game just because I own it, and they know me--that's still piracy. This feature was clearly intended for use in multi-console households. If Sony truly felt that gamesharing was a selling point, perhaps this change is the result of third-party pressures.
@mcnerven So pre-Skyrim me ordered the CE thinking, "one can never spend too much on Skyrim!". The statue is alright, but the art book it came with is fantastic--the finest video game art book I've ever seen. The statue hides in my office, but I've gone so far as to leave the book on my coffee table, in plain sight, where, y'know, normal people might see it--that's how good it is.
I'm not certain it warrants $150, but I wanted to share.
@Copybass Ah jeez zombies Oh. Oh, I see. I guess I never realized that Bethesda was incapable of making a good game; they've just been taking credit for the masterpieces their fans produce. Shame on them for creating an awesome experience and allowing fans to collectively improve upon it.
If you don't want to support them, I'm dumbfounded, but I guess that's your choice. I'm going to vote with my money, because--Holy crap! Skyrim is out Friday!

Skyrim dialogue gets salty when unnecessarily censored
