With Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg already involved with games it can't be too long before Mel Gibson hops on the bandwagon, then most of these questions will be answered. :o)
I think people's concerns about cheaters and idiots are valid. While XBL isn't perfect at least people do get banned.
If only Joystiq had some sort of similar system to deal with people like Cody (#47) that believe 'fag' is an acceptable way of describing people that act badly online. Homophobic cock.
You know Joystiq this set of comments would be a great place to start banning some people for their ridiculous (and offensive) homophobia...
Also Anonymous Rep, stores are taking pre-orders for the PS3 already. There was a story on here last month about the Australian Toys'R'Us bundling in a free game. Do you really believe Sony now won't allocate any stock to Toys'R'Us?
I think it's pretty safe to say that anyone with a swastika as an icon is immature. Or really ignorant. And as other posters have made clear this isn’t an issue of Freedom of Speech, but a discussion of what’s acceptable on Nintendo’s Wi-Fi service.
"I couldn't think of anything else to put as my emblem, so I put the Nazi flag as it. So does that make me immature?"
Yes it does. Next time think harder/longer, especially if you claim to have any understanding of the subject matter.
However, on a more general note I think Rob (#51) is onto something. Racist abuse in games seems to be on the rise and to keep dismissing it as 13 year old boys playing from a trailer somewhere might not be helping.
People do this for shock value because of the anonymous nature of the game/net and because there's little that can be done to police it. I'm lead to believe the typical ban from XBL for this sort of thing is 1-2 weeks. Maybe if the bans were longer and there were more consequences (ie having your scores wiped etc) it would encourage more accountability?
Without wanting to sound too snobbish, if this happened I hope there'd be an option for paid members to opt out of playing with the ad-supported people. There's too already many kids on XBL and I don't want to come across loads more.
