Nono, the car still drives fine. There's no reason why you can't still drive around by yourself, it's just that you can't go to the track and go against other people unless you agree.
I don't think that is an accurate analogy. It's more like:
Suppose you bought a Sony branded car. One of the additional perks of buying said car is to be able to go to a race track and race against other people for free. However to race on the track you must agree to their rules. Now because of illegal modifications to the car, you can't use their track if you have a 6 cd changer. You can either agree to the rules and remove the cd changer, or you can simply not race on the track anymore. The car itself works just fine, which is what you purchased.
I still play DotA nightly with friends and I have not yet played HON, only watched the gameplay vids, so correct me if I'm wrong.
The map layout is pretty much the same as DotA, with the same tower points and neutral points. Some heroes are new but others are direct copys of the DotA counterparts, ie Pudge as...devourer? Something like that. Item's look similar, although I don't know the specifics about them. And the text on the screen is the same as DotA, "(somebody) pwned (somebody) for XXX gold." HON might add more polish, but doesn't really present any major changes in the mechanics.
LoL is taking the direction Demigod did. Using the concepts of DotA, and adding things not present in DotA. For example their summoner system, a skill tree system, and having multiple maps.
I'm not saying HON is going to be a bad game, I'm pretty interested in trying it. I just don't really see anything really new.
Heroes of Newerth is a clone of DotA with upgraded graphics, as said so by its own creaters. Whereas League of Legends is trying to take the concept and expand on it.
Demigod was similar, it took the concept and tried to make it's own game out of it, but it failed by being too simplistic. Whether or not LoL will succeed is still to be seen, but I don't really think LoL is comparable to Heroes of Newerth.
