vNES has 575 games: Demo and consider future VC titles

Dec 30th 2006 9:11PM (Joystiq)
All games are pointless because you can pirate them, right? Well I suppose the next gen consoles aren't to that point yet, but anything previous can be pirated and played "for free". Does that make buying them pointless? I guess carlos and v1cious think so.

Crysis crisis averted: heading to Xbox 360? [update 1]

Dec 30th 2006 2:16PM (Joystiq)
Regardless of what happens, both the Xbox360 and PS3 can run Crysis. They are just drama queens. DirectX 10, just like any DirectX version, it's some magical thing that creates amazing graphics. It is simply a tool. As stated, Crysis was running on DX9. Other consoles don't even have DirectX and they have had no problems making superb graphics. The Xbox had DirectX 8.1. It's really moot. If a developer wants to port a game to Xbox360 or PS3 or whatever, it can be done.

Crytek's comments seem to suggest they don't want to maintain a DX9 version or an OpenGL-based version of their game. It's really their loss. The money is in console software sales. They spend so much time developing the engine and game, you would think they would want to increase their chances of sales by supporting more platforms. I guess not. It will also be a hard to license the engine out to other developers if it ONLY works on PCs- Wait, only PCs running Windows Vista. Ouch. Another developer would choose the Unreal 3 engine, as it can be made to run on everything. Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Linux, Mac OSX, Wii (regardless of what Mark Rein says...),PS3, Xbox 360, etc, etc, etc.

I have a feeling they will be forced to port the game and engine to other platforms eventually.

How did you blow your NES cartridge?

Oct 28th 2006 9:51PM (Joystiq)
Blowing on cartridges puts moisture from your breath on the contacts and corrodes them over time. There was nothing wrong with the cartridges to begin with, assuming they weren't extremely dirty- and blowing isn't going to help in that case. It was the connectors in the NES which became worn and separated. The cartridge connector slides between two of the NES' connectors, which are stationary. When you push the cartridge down, it makes contact with the NES' connectors. Over time, these get worn and aren't as "springy" anymore, and contact is never made. The Famicom and NES2 don't have this problem, obviously. The reason Nintendo did it for the NES was because they thought the American audience wanted a more "professional" looking device, and not a "toy".

Why did blowing work then? Good question. Maybe the moisture from your breath bridged the connection between the cartridge and NES? Maybe it did nothing and you just needed to seat the cartridge a different way since the connectors were worn? Regardless, you are only doing damage, even if it "works".

Determining the future of Nintendo's Game Boy

Oct 25th 2006 3:36PM (Joystiq)
Of course "Game Boy" isn't dead. "Game Boy" is a great brand with HUGE mind share. If Nintendo knew that the DS would be so successful, they would have called it the "Game Boy DS". No doubt. They didn't because the DS was viewed as a very big risk.

The next portable system from Nintendo will use and expand on the technology of the DS and be called "Game Boy"- Mark my words. It is by far the most logical thing to do. Parents tell their children, who are playing PSP or DS, "Stop playing that damned Game Boy". Portables = "Game Boys".

Gears is gold, Emergence Day defined

"GoW isn't just hype. I won't deny it has been talked about a bunch, but it really is a new sub-genre for FPS. It's pretty exciting. The whole duck and cover thing has never really been done in an FPS."

huh? First off, its not an FPS, like someone else mentioned. Secondly, EVERY FPS has had "duck and cover" to varying degrees. In FPS' you could hide behind cover, duck, lean around the edges, peek above obstacles, etc. GoW simply takes the freedom of movement and puts it into 1 button that you press while near something you can hide behind. It's a dumbed down version of the natural "duck and cover" nature of most psuedo-realistic FPS', and even in completely unrealistic FPS'. In the original Doom you would take cover on occasion.

Triton users to get replacement copy of Prey

Steam already has an "offline" mode. And a "backup" utility. If Steam shutdown, you could back all your games up and use them in offline mode. Valve is very well off and I don't see it happening anytime soon, but if it were to happen, they would probably patch Steam automatically to ensure no problems with the above "offline mode" and "backup" utilities, if they don't already work now. Of course I think you need to login at least once after installation, so they would perhaps just remove any login authentication and assume you used the backup utility to save the games to disc or whatever.

Steam has measures in place to cope with this problem already and it's nature allows them to patch all the Steam clients in the world immediately to deal with any unforseen problems.

Download Vista RC2 now

Oct 9th 2006 11:36PM (Joystiq)
This isn't beta. This is a release candidate. A release candidate means the developers said "Ok, this is complete and seems to be bug free and ready to ship". So yes, its NOT supposed to have assloads of bugs. Every "final" release of something was once a "release candidate". Complaints about the stability of the release are very appropriate. In fact, if you don't complain, they will rename the release from "RC2" to "Final" and charge you $200 for it in a couple of months. You don't want that, do you?

And the hype behind Vista for gaming purposes is blown out of proportion. Don't believe the hype. Stay with WinXP SP2 or Win2k SP4 for gaming until Vista is patched and/or you have no other choice.

Thank god VC spelled it out for us this time, we are so feeble minded.

Which is it, Sony? "Blu-ray is dead!" or "Long live Blu-ray!"?

Who would have guessed. Another VC post.

This post's chain of reasoning is more poor than even the worst fanboy comments on this blog. Terrible. Just report news, VC, your attempts at teh funneh and teh smrt fail, big time. That's why there are so many comments. These posts are rubbish.
