ELSPA: Manhunt ban is good. Us: WTF?

Jun 20th 2007 9:21AM (Joystiq)
The BBFC has always been a good and fair organisation for the games industry. I believe they have published info to the effect that violent games do not cause violent behaviour.

For the BBFC to effectively ban Manhunt 2 means that there must have been some pretty harsh stuff in the game.

I completely understand people's desire to play the game, and their need to stamp their feet and claim it is their right to do so.

But we have to ask ourselves, as active, healthy members of society, and people who play games and want the industry we love to thrive and grow... do we need games like Manhunt 2?

Are games like this helping the industry or holding it back?

I'm sure it could be argued that Manhunt 2 is a pointless attempt by Rockstar to sell a game not on merit but on the back of sensationalist marketing. I'm sure it could also be argued that the people who would get the most enjoyment from this game are the squealing prepubescents who fall under the 18 rating Rockstar were aiming for.

It puzzles me just what is in the game that could cause the BBFC to not give it a rating. I wonder if their decision was based partly on content/context and partly on the failure of retailers and parents to restrict sales and monitor the games under 18's are playing. There's also the argument that even thought the BBFC is an independent organisation, maybe there was a bit of Government pressure in there too.

I'm all for freedom of choice but I'll give the BBFC the benefit of the doubt... What would be worse... Manhunt 2 hitting the shelves and THEN getting banned due to public/Government uproar or the BBFC showing that it has some teeth in the first place and banning a game it feels is not fit for sale. I'm sure the former would harm the industry far more than the latter.

LotRO updates and takes a trip to shores of Evendim

Solid game, good fun. Can't wait for the new content.

Strange that they won't give out subscriber numbers - yet they keep stating they are above expectations.

The Euro servers are filling up nicely and I'm having a blast since leaving WoW.

GameCity returns to Nottingham in October

The Trent was always waaaaaay better than Nottingham Uni. ;)

Ah, the memories!

Colin McRae: DiRT demo is positively filthy

May 24th 2007 11:00AM (Joystiq)
I like this demo. Definite purchase.

@3 - Yep, it is arcadey, but I never considered previous McRae games to be sim like either.

I think this is a nice direction for the series to take. Good job Codemasters! Now lets have a 360 version of TOCA Race Driver!!

PSM: Sixaxis will rumble this year

May 24th 2007 8:50AM (Joystiq)
I'm sure the person most pissed off about this is Hideo Kojima; but it looks like he got his wish!

Quote from interview with Hideo in UK PlayStation mag... "That said, I miss the rumble, and even now I hope it will come back."

I wonder if they have time to add in some rumble support to MGS4? ;)

Improove you're verbage with My Word Coach for DS, Wii

Does it cater for leet speak and the barely comprehensible ramblings of fanboy's?

If not I wouldn't recommend it to 99% of the people who post on Joystiq! :)

Duke Nukem Forever image again released via job posting

Y'know what would round off the whole DNF saga nicely..? If they launched it the same day as Halo 3!

It'd be beautiful! The crowning achievement of an inept developer.

This Wednesday: Rush n' Attack blitzes XBLA with Xevious

May 21st 2007 4:13PM (Joystiq)
I'm pretty sure that Rush n Attack was known as Green Beret on the Spectrum, C64, Atari ST, Amiga and Arcade in the UK. Possibly more systems as well, but they are the systems I 'think' I can recall seeing it on (memory isn't what it was!!)

I played that game to death on the Spectrum, but can't remember if I ever completed it though. Anyone remember the final level???

This Wednesday: Soltrio Solitaire shuffles onto XBLA

May 11th 2007 7:00PM (Joystiq)
@12. Absolute crap you say? Good job you aren't forced to download the demo, or spend the points on it.

I think it's great that MS are sticking these sort of games on XBLA. It doesn't all have to be about guns 'n violence!

Personally I won't be picking it up as I'm still hooked on Catan and the new Crackdown DLC, but it's nice that Live Arcade is catering to a wide range of gamers.

Turbine becoming fat hobbitses off LoTRO sales

May 11th 2007 3:31AM (Joystiq)
...we haven't heard of constant server crashes like we did at the beginning of WoW's life...

Come and join the Euro servers and enjoy frequent downtime!

From looking at the forums it appears the US servers are running very well, but the Euro servers (and I should stress it's the login servers - the game is fine when you actually manage to login) are causing loads of frustration!

It is a very good game though. Lots of WoW influence (although WoW itself is hardly original). Turbine have created a very well rounded game, and considering how new it is it really feels solid with plenty of low end content (not sure about end-game as I'm taking my time and enjoying Middle-Earth).
