Acer Aspire Revo listed for pre-order in UK with May 18th release date

May 18th 2009 3:42PM (Engadget)
Well, loads of people have successfully tested (see basically any Revo review) where they've played Blu-Rays over a USB 2.0 connection - which has a theoretical max speed of 480 mbs (half that of gbe). but in practice tends to max out at around 150-200 mbps. And as others have stated at various points in this thread, Blu-Ray itself maxes out at 40-45 mpbs bit rate, so in theory a standard 10/100 netwrk conneciton could stream two Blu-Rays at once.

But, for those who need more proof... Got my Revo hooked up to my Vista Home Premium PC and it streams HD-DVD and Blu-Ray rips just fine. As long as you play it in (the bundled) PowerDVD - gotta let that Ion GPU take things over remember! Oh yeah, and that's over G band wi-fi.

Streams standard DVD rips brilliantly while doing other stuff too - downloaded Windws 7 RC1 and that Bill Bailey Orchestra thing off BBC iPlayer at the same time without nary a hiccup.

If/when Acer release a dual core Atom version, my early adopter one will go upstairs and be replaced - the games I want to play are just a little too jerky right now, but all the benchmarks seem to point to the dual core letting the Ion GPU spread its wings properly.

"Take it easy Private - just press the thumb down on the switch, press middle finger and then pull your index finger towards you to reboot. If you have trouble remembering it - fire select, safety, trigger. Just don't point the gun at me while you.." BLAM

"Sarge? Sarge? Damn...."

Xbox goes profitable, almost like a grown-up business

Jan 25th 2008 8:02AM (Engadget)
@ Jeff

What you are saying is true about profts and loss, but only if Microsoft's Ents. Division was a different company. Microsoft as a homogenous entity absorbed the losses generated by both the Xbox and later the Ents. Divisions - Microsoft as a whole posted profts year on year ever since the original Xbox was released.

Therefore, even though that particular division operated on a loss, the company as a whole operated on a profit - in effect the circa $6 billion sunk into the various brands (Xbox, 360 and guessing Zune, etc) has already been paid for by other divisions (over-simplifying, I know, as lots of other things will happen to ease the burden and maximise cash-flow, etc, etc), so now that the division is also making a profit, it's just pouring even more money onto the cash pile.

Microsoft forcing fees? Marketplace Phil. 101 with Epic and Microsoft

Oh and Sheppy:

re: Gates not controlling MS anymore - I wrote about that *quicklychecksblogfordatesubmitted* way back in August last year. Did two spectacularly unfunny parodies on it.

But his personal fortune is still tied to Microsoft's, so....sorry.

I donate money through normal methods too. Cool that you support Child's Play - really, good on ya'. But if you're going to criticise the MS-Gates route, then you at least have to be aware that all normal charities have similar problems, where so much of the money donated actually goes on admin and wages and the like.

But my point is that I, personally (as in MY opinion, my thoughts, the things that make me, me), LOVE the fact that Microsoft, almost uniquely, basically ONLY screws over first-world populations.

Whatever the revenue-versus-charitable-output figure is, the irony that Microsoft is seen by Americans, Europeans and Australasians as the most evil corporation in the world, because it has the audacity to get THEM to pay through the nose for stuff they don't need (that hardly ever works properly anyway) - well, that really is a fantastic feeling. For me.

Which, again, is why I am happy to pay for Microsoft stuff, irrespective of every other donation I make, which, let's face it, are often only there to make middle-class people feel good about themselves.

PS m- Sheppy - not a veggy. So, I didn't get called a communist, but I guess 'hippy joins peace core, dies of AIDs' is close enough.

Thanks for proving me right, Sheppy. *huggles*

Wow! And there wasn't even an intervening post in the way!

Sorry that you're the sort of uncaring git that (sic) does not feel any kind of guilt, personal or collective, but hey, you enjoy your cheap prices and carry on turning a blind eye to everything that happens.

*waits for 'this isn't the place for this kind of discussion' comment*

So going to get flamed as a communist by idiots for saying this, but what the hell:

I have absolutely no objections to people having to pay money to Microsoft. You know why? Because Bill is giving most of his fortune away to people who don’t even have clean water supplies, or electricity, or any kind of healthcare whatsoever. Microsoft getting richer means Bill gets richer, meaning more money goes to these people.

Boo-hoo, you have to pay the equivalent of an over-priced, watered down coffee, with high-calorie, sugar-bloated muffin on the side, which could probably have paid for the daily wages of two of the workers that picked the beans for that lukewarm drink you’ll probably half-finish then throw away anyway.

I personally see it as poetic justice – after all, we all in the Western world got rich off of exploiting generations of other peoples across the globe, which we still do to this day in one form or another. It’s also why I put up with off-shore telephone centres – someone, somewhere, has a deep sense of irony and I LOVE it!

I’m not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but I willingly give my money to Microsoft in the knowledge that eventually it will actually do one hell of a lot of good.

Square Enix confirms new MMO for Xbox 360 & Vista, maybe PS3

Feb 9th 2007 5:56PM (Joystiq)
@Ragnarok

You DO realise that Xbox Live Silver (you know, the FREE SERVICE YOU GET WITH EVERY SINGLE 360) allows you to play MMOs, right?

That you don't need a Live Gold account for subscription-based games?

Because the game will be hosted on the developers/publishers own servers? And you pay them a separate fee?

No. Of course you didn't, because you're just a little troll sent here to annoy us, as evinced by you bringing up a single example of a game that had nothing to do with the thread.

Oh and Gears? I have never experienced lag in the month that I've had it and I'm on a 2 meg line about 4 miles from my local exchange in the arse end of Planet Thanet, using a wireless bridge of my own dubious contrivance that has to stretch through four floors! And don't even get me started on what the atmospherics do - but that's what happens with the North Sea fifty yards from your window!

Unexplained PlayStation Network and Sixaxis phenomena, mostly explained

I work in a school and we have loads of wireless access points around - so believe me, I know a thing or two about wireless interference.

I've *always* said that using bluetooth for the PS3 controllers, along with 2.4 ghz wireless on a switch-system was a big mistake. They are on the same frequency - there will always be interference, it's just a question of how much.

It may not seem like it matters too much at the moment, but what about when you invite a friend round to play split-screen together against guys online - two bluetooth controllers, plus wireless network.

Then, what if you want to use headsets (say you are two members of a 20 man team on Resistance or something) - you now have FOUR wireless devices going off while your wireless network switches in between.

And you'd better pray you don't have your cordless phone near it (or your neighbour's in the next apartment). Or that you get peckish and microwave a snack while you play...

I'd love to see how Sony can resolve these inherent interference issues with an update (as, no doubt, would Linksys, Netgear, D-Link, Cisco and all the rest).

At least the 360 wireless adapter, although not included, at least gives the option of 802.11a...

5 ghz ftw!

North American, Japanese PS3 launch limited to 500,000 units

@55 (http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/06/north-american-japanese-ps3-launch-limited-to-500-000-units/2#c2038280)

Nice when people do research; maybe you should try it some time before bashing keys with your forehead.

UK and Germany combined make up $7 billion.

So, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Republic of Ireland, Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Sweden, Switzerland and ALL THE OTHERS, would only have to total $1.31 billion for Europe to beat Japan and $2.9 billion to beat the US.

Which I think is pretty likely. So, how about YOU 'get bent', stop, think, breathe THEN comment and realise that Western Europe IS the most important market and screwing us over will only hurt companies in the long run. Oh, and these sales are only likely to go UP, as we get all the new EU countries starting to contribute, like Poland, Czech Republic and all the others.

All figures from 2004:

German VG market: $2.9 billion -- http://www.euromonitor.com/Toys_and_games_in_Germany_(MMP)
