GDC 2012: Forty minutes with Derek Smart and Line of Defense

Mar 12th 2012 6:51PM (Massively)
@Lenn

You took what he said out of context. Which is hardly surprising.

But seriously, how would YOU feel if the shoe was on your foot?

tbh, I don't even know why he posted and we have no way of knowing if that in fact him, though if you click on "unverified" it goes to his profile. So it must be him I guess.

@pskfry

Tell me about it. People just like to bring others down because it probably makes them feel good about themselves. What happens in these posts is the equivalent of schoolyard bullying - only these people would never - ever - face him because they are cowards and hide behind anonymity. Funny thing is, for as long as they've been doing it, that's as long as he's been developing games. Imagine if he was a politician! :)

It is OK to not like him, I'm sure that he doesn't care and he has said so. But to waste time polluting these forums with pure false rumors and insulting him, is exactly the reason that he treats you trolls the way that he does. So far, there hasn't been one single person who has ever met him or dealt with him and said anything bad about him. Except maybe those guys he fired from Alganon when he took over the project. And just last week, apparently he was out with a bunch of people at GDC and one of the devs from Planetside2 and that guy tweeted about it, as did Ben Kuchera from Penny Arcade etc. You can see those tweets over here. http://twitter.com/#!/dsmart

My momma always told me that if you can't say something nice about someone, don't say anything at all. Kids these days.

Some other guy posted nonsense about him being divorced because of a game? What crap. Like the false Coke machine incident (which the computer magazine that started it, later clarified to be false) that notion came from a Take2 ad for BC3K using model Jo Guest in which the theme was of a gamer neglecting his wife. I believe that poster is still up on the Internet somewhere. In fact, as luck would have it, that ad is right there on the front page of Smart's personal website. Here, go look: http://www.dereksmart.com/2012/01/battlecruiser/

@Shadanwolf

And he had nothing to do with the development of Alganon. He just ran the company after the creator was fired and the investors brought him in. It was his direction that finally saw the game completed last year and they also announced an expansion to that game which would have been dead and closed down since 2009 were it not for his involvement. That stuff is all over the net, so where do you people get this crap from? It must be time consuming to create all these anon accounts and do the drive by posting trying to goad him or spread false or poorly sourced information.

@Shadanwolf

"I have seen nothing on MR Smarts resume that would suggest he has any idea what a good game is.In fact quite the opposite(Alganon comes to mind..unfortunately)."

You're going with that? Seriously? There isn't a single game dev who can show you their resume and you go "Aha!! you know what a good game is". That's just bullshit. As evidenced by the MANY failed games, closed studios and lost money since Smart (who has been around since like forever while everyone else has been failing like flies) started this almost three (I think thats what the reports say) decades ago.

Exactly. He had nothing to do with the development of Alganon.

Line of Defense gets gung-ho in its latest trailer

Here is what they said over at the PC Gamer exclusive release

===
The important thing that Derek wanted this trailer to do, was use actual gameplay mechanics & assets. Some of the drawbacks are visible in some areas e.g. the animations appear a bit sluggish as they try to stay in sync with the targeted frame rate of the video which is different from the game's animation frame rate target. Rest assured, they are way smoother in the game as you will see in the game videos due out next week on the new site.
We're still a small indie (10 people working on LOD) team working very hard as we always have and once the new site (lodmmo.com) goes live next week, you can all sign-up for a chance to play the game and be your own judge. I think that you will be impressed and surprised.
We're also going to be releasing a lot of gameplay videos in the coming weeks as well over on our YouTube channel: 3000ADGAMESCHANNEL

The Firing Line: Derek Smart on Line of Defense

@ Feydakin

I dunno what to say other than, don't play it? I mean its not like they're forcing you to play it. It may not be a good idea to you - but who cares what you think? They're not making it for you obviously.

I'll see your one thumbs down GameSpot review and raise you these. Let me know if you need more. Reviews are subjective and based on personal opinions. Just like movies, books or whatever. So basing a game on one or two reviews is foolish. Unless of course the idea is to just troll the developers.
