Japan gets "champagne gold" PSP, U.S. gets jealous

Jan 10th 2007 4:39PM (Joystiq)
The last thing Sony released in "limited edition champagne gold" was their robot dog, AIBO, shortly before they killed the product line.

We can but hope...

WRUP: second chances edition

Dec 22nd 2006 12:08PM (Joystiq Xbox)
Oblivion when I'm on my own (I just completed the "Knights of the Nine" quest line last night and I'm looking forward to "Mehrunes Razor" for free) and Gears of War co-op when the family are round. Split-screen multiplayer on a single Xbox 360 rocks - why don't more games allow this? Oh yes, and I'll probably try to get RoboBlitz finished as well - love that game, first XBLA title I've ever plunked down money for.

All-in-one gadgets: Let the dream die

Dec 13th 2006 4:58AM (Joystiq)
I have a multifunction device right now, it's called a Mio A701. It is a Windows Mobile device so it has phone and PDA, a 1.2 megapixel camera (not great but meh), GPS with software, pocket Internet Explorer (which is better than I was expecting), games (well, solitaire!), Windows Media Player (mobile version) and takes a single SD card so I have 2Gb in at present (with music and video). It's about the same size as most phones of it's ilk, not small but not a brick either. The screen is QVGA, touch sensitive and can be rotated in software depending on what you are viewing.

In all, it works very well! However, I have NEVER seen any of the mobile phone networks in the UK offer this device for sale with a contract. I had to get mine direct from a specialist Internet retailer and then beat down my existing contract provider to get a good deal.

Yes, it doesn't have the sort of gaming you'd expect on a DS or a PSP but for the occasional 10-minute diversion when you are waiting in the dentists it provides amusement.

I chose the device deliberately because I was sick of carrying a phone and a DAP and wanted GPS in the car.

Blue Dragon: more discs = better game

Oh no, not another flippin JRPG with discs crammed full of FMV rather than, y'know, a game. :-(

Why can't these people use in-engine graphics like GOW and Dead Rising? (In Dead Rising you know it's in-engine because your clothes are different in the cut-scenes when you have changed them!)

Oh well.

European Emergence Day festivities begin

Nov 18th 2006 8:45AM (Joystiq Xbox)
It finally arrived. I fired it up around 10:30 this morning and have been playing ever since (I'm taking a break now and watching the DVD included in the collectors edition while I write this).

It is AWESOME! Yeah, the graphics are astounding, the sort of thing you saw as pre-rendered cut scenes in the last-gen is now happening live, at 30fps, in HD. But the graphics would be nothing if it wasn't for the gameplay. I'm generally pretty rubbish at shooters and I find myself dying regularly even on the "easy" modes in most games. What I love about Gears is the use of tactics. You really have to think your way through the levels, rather than just blasting. If you haven't played Gears yet you just won't know what I mean but if you have, you'll be aware that there are endless opportunities to flank and work around the enemies as well as the much vaunted cover system. Added to the gameplay and graphics are the perfect motion (everything has weight and substance), the amazing sound and spot-on camera movements (for example, the camera shakes when you run like you're being chased by a live cameraman who is also dodging the bullets).

The thing you finally understand when you play it is what a complete package Gears is. The attention to detail is astounding and really shows through in every twist and turn of the game. I'm looking forward to mastering the single-player campaign. Once that's done, I'll see how multiplayer feels. I can't wait.

@1

My Collectors edition arrived from Amazon.co.uk at 9:40 this morning. Only I was at work and it didn't fit through the postbox so they took it away again! D'oh!!! Still, I'll pick it up from my local Royal Mail distribution center in the morning.

Gears of War Wiki guide needs your help

Would love to contribute..but guess what? I live in Europe, the home of the delayed release.

Naaarrrggghh!!! WANT GEARS NOW!!!!

Play what in 2007?

Nov 11th 2006 5:17AM (Joystiq Xbox)
Still no sign of Metronome I see :-(

Still, Halo 3, Mass Effect, Assassins Creed. They'll have to do!

Call of Duty 3 is cheaper on Eastern front

Nov 8th 2006 1:19PM (Joystiq Xbox)
I've bought a few titles from Play Asia and I have to say that I'm generally impressed. As a UK gamer I save a ton of cash and the games arrive within five working days.

The only niggle I had was the "European" version of Dead Rising came with a box and manual in German! The game itself is in English so no great shakes and as far as I can tell this is the ONLY game in there line-up that was like this.

X360F Contest: GOW themes & picture packs [update 1]

Oct 24th 2006 3:15PM (Joystiq Xbox)
I'll be wearing a smart pair of slacks, an open-neck shirt and a reefer jacket...but I like changing so I'll be taking a convicts uniform, a pair of white trousers and a pink shirt, a pair of trainers, various pairs of sunglasses, a plaid suit, a wrestlers outfit (with boots), a natty hat and some childrens clothes (that leave nothing to the imagination).

Oh yes, I'll be taking a camera too...
