Nintendo and Sony have done revisions last gen - adding and taking away ethernet ports/ component outs respectively as well as firmware revisions to curb piracy among other things. This isn't a new practice, and the comparison to upgrading computers is specious at best.
Oh yeah, it wouldn't surprise me if Microsoft released an adapter for the original port to output to HDMI/DVI.
