Mar 28th 2010 2:24PM (Joystiq)

Nintendo DSi XL review

Mar 26th 2010 7:43PM (Engadget)
I was pretty po'ed at first since the only things upgraded were the screens and the battery but I just didn't like the DSi screen for some reason so I traded that in (plus some games) for a DSi XL pre-order. Shame about the literally ****tty colors but oh well. And I must be one of the crazy ones since I do most of my "portable" gaming at home. I will buy the 2nd Gen of the 3DS since I've been bitten many times before by buying Nintendo's first gen portable devices starting with the original monochrome green Gameboy so this will likely hold me for the next 2 years.

Gateway NV5933u review

Thanks BrantM. That beep was seriously annoying. And whoever wrote and approved that WebCam software docking should be shot.
The trackpad is the worst thing about this. It sometimes detects me doing a pinch to zoom when I only had the tip of my finger on the touchpad with the rest of my fingers far away. A non-centered qwerty bothered me at first but I got used to it now. I do wish the battery life was better and that it didn't come with this much crapware.
Still for $499, I cannot complain much. I love the speed (esp after I replaced the 5400rpm with a 7200rpm drive) and my young niece loves the bluray drive and the bright 15.6" screen.

How do you decide which console to play?

Mar 26th 2008 6:14PM (Joystiq)
Well I guess my buddy and I are lucky ones. We've both had launch date (pre-launch actually since we won them from Pepsi) 360s and they're both still going strong. I do know 3 friends however who are on their 2nd 360s since their early 360's have RRoD'ed on them.
Most of us are multi console owners with at least a 360/Wii combo. I like some of the PS3 games so I have one of them too plus both PSP and DS.
When it comes to gaming time, the DS and the 360 take the crown. Any multiconsole game (other than Rock Band. songsharing FTW), I have bought for the 360 mainly due to more online competition, custom soundtracks and the fact they're usually better overall.

Rock Band Wii drum kit pictured, nagging questions answered

Powder, you are putting the blame in the wrong direction. Activision is to blame both ways. The GH guitar is not an open standard. As EA/Harmonix has learned with the PS3, reverse-engineering will not work since Activision will cry to Nintendo and block whatever they do (and likely sue them). So now look at the reverse direction, you cannot play any guitar other than GH branded guitars on guitar hero. The software will block it. EA/Harmonix cannot "copy" the GH guitar's interface/bypass security without getting sued to the stratosphere. But they are offering their interface to anybody to use. You can bet Activision won't support that but any other company can make use of the Rock Band peripherals if they want to (hence open "standard").
However, regarding this crap lazy ass effort of Rock Band for the Wii has resulted in my respect for Harmonix dropping down 2 notches. This is uncool and just says lots about how lazy they are/have become. They should've farmed it out to a bunch of Gamecube centric developers who've had the Wii devkit for more than a few months.

Sony delays Skype, microphones for PSP in Japan

Jan 23rd 2008 1:49PM (Joystiq)
The DS has homebrew SIP phone capability however.
Been out thx to the homebrew community for months.

I believe you need skype the company to actually put out clients/make it compatible since it's not an open-source system.

SingStar players saddened by understocked SingStore

Jan 15th 2008 10:03PM (Joystiq)
There goes the shep man defending the PS3 (and Sony) like his life depended on it. He may claim he has no bias since he supposedly owned all 3 systems at one point but I find that doubtful. We all have our slants and historically based on his posting here, all he's done is defend Sony 90% of the time.
The assholeness of the Live experience mainly comes from the fact that almost everybody has easy access to a mic/headset. It comes with every Prem/Elite. Put mics into every PS3 sold and watch that asshole ratio skyrocket. Pairing a bluetooth headset isn't quite as simple as plugging in a 360 mic into the controller.
You'll also find that (for now), the PS3 skews to the older and hopefully way more mature audience. When kids start begging for PS3s for Xmas (good luck with that), you'll find that asshole ratio go up.
I'd love to see Nintendo put mic capable games into their offerings. It will be enough to turn the Nintendo logo blue.

Paramount and Dreamworks ditch Blu-Ray for HD-DVD exclusivity

FUD campaign by the Blu-Ray (i.e. Sony) camp going on right now. I love it.

Sony pulls the plug on Connect, refocuses on PlayStation

Jun 18th 2007 3:50AM (Engadget)
Truth be told, I don't mind ATRAC at all. I like the space savings with Atrac3+
It's just the friggin' software I hate (Sonicsuckage then Connect). Sony cannot write decent software to save their lives.
I have two ATRAC capable players and I love my Sony walkman nws705 player despite the DRM (gotta love the 20+ hour playback times even on random mode).
Sony is doing fine. Bluray is doing well. PS3 not so much and I won't shed a tear if it tanks (and also the PSP).

Harmonix donates $2000 to Guitar Hero fansite Score Hero

May 29th 2007 2:00AM (Joystiq)
The thing to note here is, the DEVELOPERS are the ones that put up the money. Not Red Octane. Not Activision. And the dev is least likely the one that get the lion's share of the profits.
