Saudi mobile carriers ban SMS voting for Arab reality show

Dec 28th 2005 4:44AM (Engadget)
Dear Mohammad Sameer Ali,
I find it hard to believe that your are an Arab, a Muslim, or even seen Saudi Arabia post the 1960's.
If you are over 80 years old and haven't seen Saudi Arabia since 1970, there may have been some truth to what you said.
Lets go over your 8 points:
1. Women can't work.
-----> yes they are not allowed to work as prostitutes, go out any day of the week and you see women doctors, teachers, computer engineers and sales representatives.
-----
2. Women can't drive.
-----> True
3. Women can't travel without being accompanied with a related male.
-----> Only abroad.
4. Women have to wear a black covering cloth at all times, it covers them from head to toe, hands and eyes included. The eye section is kind of netted for visibility.
------> Not true, want proof?, open any Saudi newspaper.
5. Women should not have any kind of physical interaction with unrelated men. Even including hand-shakes.
------> only if the man has a contagious disease, a women has complete freedom in shaking anyone's hand.
6. A couple of years back education was not allowed for Women, it was only allowed recently after human rights groups became aware of it.
------> how do you explain female graduates from Saudi universities for the past 20 years?
------
7. Sex Education is banned for High school children.
------> True, they get enough of that on TV.
8. Schools and other educational institutions should have seperate women and men sections. Men and Women seating in same room is not allowed.
-------> that's true in schools, but seating areas are open in hospitals and airports among others.
-----
As for punishments, they are only for the most heinous of crimes (rape, murder).
Car jackers here get off with a minimum sentence (a few weeks in jail).
If one thing, people consider the government too lenient which has sparked a crime spree.
Again, I urge you to visit Saudi Arabia; it has changed vastly in the past 35 years.
