Jan 17th 2009 6:35AM (Engadget)Since they have no obligation to actually deliver the goods, they have basically got free advertising for their site and who knows, people may spend a bit of cash on something else while they are there.
(They did this really early last year with some PS3 pre-releases, the stories were on various game/blog sites, they then blanket emailed those that ordered saying the price was incorrect and to cancel you had to contact their CS department, they didn't do it automatically).

So you can see why, for whatever the right and wrong reasons, Sony delayed the release by a week.
This would have caused untold bad publicity later down the line if they had left it in, some people took offense and went straight to the media with it, they ran with it then it gets blown out of all proportion.
