Gozzy -its a Panasonic PV500 (in europe) 1024*720 I believe -also connected by 3rd party connections.

Zerocorpse -Im pretty sure MS said there is no upscaling done by the xbox at all either by component or vga -do you have a separate upscaling device connected?

tried both vga and component on the 360...both were pretty much identical when it came to dvd playback.

Good point Tobor, but seeing as the HDDVD will be just for movies..for now,its ok.

Seems poor on MS/ATI behalf to botch the DVD codecs on 360 in any case..and doesn't breed confidence in me for the the external unit.

Time will tell I suppose.

just like to point its wasnt the image quality from the 360 that I was bitching about, downloaded content, games and dash board have great detail.

its just the DVD playback thats sucks.

Right -..maybe time for a change of topic.

I've been very unimpressed by the quality of DVD playback on my 360 -compared to my progressive scan player(composite connection) it just sucks, lots of haloing, poor detail in dark regions etc. -it seems to be due to poor decoding software.
(it also pales in compaison to dvd playback from my laptop connected to the tv via VGA port)

Was hoping the last dashboard update would improve this but that didn't happen.

Anyone reckon the HDDVD will have good quality playback?
