RANT: Viral marketing cause of console flame wars?

Jan 28th 2007 12:49PM (Joystiq Playstation)
Sure viral marketing is real & dozens if not hundreds of companies do it all the time. There are dozens of advertising companies dedicated to this.

Heck, politicians & religious groups do it, why is it a stretch to believe MSFT (why are they evil when they make Windows and good when they make the XBox?) and Sony do it?

What if... you could learn real guitar through games?

Jan 5th 2007 8:38AM (Joystiq)
This doesn't exist already? They came out with a Midi interface for guitar nearly a decade ago - there was a sensor under each string to detect the vibrations, it plugged into a controller that gave it all sorts of tones (piano, orchestral, etc.).

Anyway, this sort of thing could work well. Guitar isn't all that hard, and an objective & infinitely patient tutor in the form of a computer could go a long way towards teaching someone to play or improving your chops.

Another "assertion" that MGS4 is going to 360

Dec 22nd 2006 2:11AM (Joystiq Playstation)
If MGS4 goes to the 360 one of two things will happen.

1. It's a straight port, possibly done in-house, but not really involving Kojima much. It'll be somewhat watered down since Kojima exploits every single possible aspect of the consoles he develops on making straight ports difficult - something that's done easily on the PS3 may be difficult to do on the 360 (and v.v.) - as he points out, the rain effects were more difficult to do on the XBox and they had frame slowdowns because they had to write a bunch of custom code to do something the PS2 did natively.

2. It's basically a different version of the game, rewritten specifically for the 360, possibly done 3rd party. Not just additional levels, but gameplay mechanics changed to exploit the 360's capabilities. Similar to the upcoming PS2 re-write of the original Tomb Raider or the Gamecube re-write of the original MGS.

Anyway, I fully expect Kojima's next game to be for the Wii.

A little bit of foresight -- Portable Ops style

Dec 22nd 2006 1:57AM (Joystiq Playstation)
Sure, makes perfect sense. Subsistence was a testing ground for the new camera angles & multiplayer, so why not Portable Ops too.

Best Buy holding out until 12/17?

"I wouldn't think the typo thing would flag this as a rumor."

Yes, it being a rumor would flag it as a rumor..

The color of next-gen gaming is brown

Because the world is brown?

Joystiq Poll: Do you watch cutscenes? [update 1]

Oct 8th 2006 5:15PM (Joystiq)
One time viewer here as well. Maybe if the second time I play the game is several years later I'll watch them again. Has anyone seen the http://speeddemosarchive.com/ ? These guys know how to blast through cutscenes.

Fans of Kojima and Zone of the Enders rejoice! A third is born...

Oct 2nd 2006 3:00AM (Joystiq Playstation)
Now all they need to do is reissue ZOE2 so I can get my grubby hands on a copy.

Another MGS4 trailer for us to enjoy

Who was that guy at the end of the trailer?

Yeah... this is the last Metal Gear Solid game...
