It would've been better if the doomsday event was set to a nonspecific time in the future, rather than tacking it on to the 2012/Mayan calendar lunacy (pun intended).. Looks like they just wanted to cover all bases, since they already had mythology from several other religions/cultures.

May 5th 2011 12:48PM (Joystiq)The whole point of Desmond reliving his ancestors' lives is to find the remaining Minerva temples in order to prevent the "2012" apocalypse from happening. The first and second game's present is already set in 2012. By the looks of it, it'll be 2015 irl before we get to that part of the plot.
