It's Not So Easy to Become the New Lisbeth Salander

Aug 2nd 2010 7:00PM (Cinematical)
Oh, wow, Katie Jarvis would be amazing. First name I've seen bandied about for this that I've actually sat up and gone, YES. Assuming Fish Tank wasn't a fluke, of course. I hope her contention is more than just a rumor.

Watch This: Tarantino vs. Coen Brothers

Apr 12th 2010 8:27PM (Cinematical)
That was a lot of fun! Some of the edit-matching on the fight scenes was really good, too.

Also, Steve Buscemi has also been in multiple films by both Tarantino and the Coens.

What's the Best Movie You Never Saw?

Feb 21st 2010 9:42PM (Cinematical)
The Godfather Part II. I'm not as big a fan of The Godfather as most film buffs, which has probably been part of me putting off seeing Part II. But this is the year.

Blu-ray Still Struggling to Find Customers

Oct 13th 2009 5:10PM (Cinematical)
I think you're exactly right - Blu-ray isn't the next generation of DVD, it's the next generation of laserdisc. It'll have a future for quality-obsessed cinephiles, collectors, and home theatre nuts (among which I count myself), but for most people, DVD is fine and digital streaming will be fine. Blu-ray over DVD isn't the kind of seismic change that DVD over VHS was.

Let's Make Theater Hopping Legal!

Oct 5th 2009 2:16PM (Cinematical)
I don't want to see small snippets of films, either. I've hopped into in-progress screenings of things I've already seen to see a little bit again, but I wouldn't do it on anything I hadn't seen.

Instead of theatre-hopping, how about the other idea in the post, the pass idea? Instead of spending $10 for one movie, get a pass for $15 that lets you see as much as you want that day/weekend. One of the repertory cinemas in LA has a $25/month pass that lets you into all of their regular screenings (and gives discounts on special screenings) - I see a ton of stuff there that I wouldn't otherwise, because it doesn't cost me any more to see eight films a month than two. I've heard of regular first-run cinemas in the UK that do something similar. I wish there were more programs like that.

JoystiQuitter: Velvet Assassin

May 4th 2009 3:10PM (Joystiq)
This is a good feature, and I like how balanced it was - you admitted that you didn't finish the game, said why, but didn't bash the game and still pointed out good things about it.

I'll still probably check out Velvet Assassin, but it's for sure a rental.

How Sick of 'Watchmen' Are You?

Mar 9th 2009 6:30PM (Cinematical)
I'm not tired of Watchmen itself, or the coverage on it in general. You know what I'm tired of? People titling their posts "I Watched Watchmen" or "Why Watch Watchmen" or "Who's Watching Watchmen" some other variation that involves the verb "to watch" with the title. It's the tag line, I get it, BUT IT'S DONE, PEOPLE. It's not clever or humorous.

Discuss: 'The Princess Bride' is Only for the Guys

Jan 29th 2009 6:46PM (Cinematical)
I think you definitely have a point, but there are exceptions. I think I was seventeen when i first saw Princess Bride, and in fact had put off seeing it for a long time because all my friends jammered about it so much and it sounded silly. But I was a pretty much instant convert when I saw it.

Discuss: 'The Princess Bride' is Only for the Guys

There are people (of any gender or otherwise over-generalized category) that don't like The Princess Bride? o_0 I didn't know that was possible.

It's always struck me as the film that has everything - adventure, romance, comedy - and that can be enjoyed as a kid for the swashbuckling aspects and as an adult for the sly satire (and the swashbuckling aspects).

Live from Sundance: Our Coverage Begins!

Jan 16th 2009 1:04AM (Cinematical)
Is there a separate RSS feed for Sundance-related posts? I popped the URL for sundance.cinematical.com into my feedreader, and it doesn't look like it, but I want to make sure I don't miss any Sundance-related things because of just being subscribed to the main feed.
