Nokia's VP talks N8, MeeGo 'milestone product,' tablets, Android and more!

Aug 6th 2010 8:30PM (Engadget)
@bob1000

Yeah, that's a pretty blind comment. If u have ever used a Nokia smartphone, u would be very surprised by how light the OS is on the CPU even compared to today's smartphones. It is also a reason why they have such fantastic battery life.

I am still using my E71 as my main device which still receives frequent updates three years after its release. Have you ever sat there waiting for a Blackberry 9700 (or any other BB for that matter) to boot? It takes ages with that stupid hourglass!!!

The phones simply don't need super fast processors and they are amazingly nimble. I watch my fare share of videos on the phone and it doesn't have issues with that either. My E71 has been a great little phone and I am almost certain that I will be replacing it with another Nokia down the line. The iPhone 4 has certainly caught my attention, however, I am not willing to sign myself into a 3 year contract (in Canada) for a more expensive plan when my existing device does absolutely everything I need of it.

I will say however, that Nokia really needs to pick up the pace and I am counting the days for the new MeeGo devices and doubly more for their new E-Series smartphones. They are built S O L I D.

Nokia N8 video overview: Symbian^3 homescreens, messaging, email, and Flash-capable browser on show

@Tes Go to email.nokia.com and register. Then you can see a list of phones that the new software is compatible with (it is compatible with most of their popular devices eg.: E71 and most N series).

Once you register, it will send u a download link to your phone. Download and install the E-Mail app from Nokia and you now have instant push email as well as notifications on your homescreen!!! =)

Have been using it for at least a year and a half now. Plus, you can add any e-mail address and it renders in HTML. Enjoy!

Samsung planning Android 1.6 update for Behold II -- but that's it

May 29th 2010 10:36PM (Engadget)
@jadedmoonstudios What were you exactly burned by? The fact that the E71x has S60FP5 as opposed to FP3? Because frankly, I have an E71 and I will take it over the E71x any day! The amount of crap that AT&T or Telus (in Canada) put on the E71x completely negates the experience.

Also, the E71x does not receive as many updates direct from Nokia, because it is a provider independent phone and was never sold through Nokia directly.

In fact, the E71 received yet another update just this month which has upgraded Microsoft Exchange and the built-in messaging apps. Since owning the phone on launch, I have obtained at least a dozen software upgrades from Nokia.

Please don't get the issue confused, just because your provider does not allow you to upgrade the phone, doesn't mean Nokia doesn't allow it. For example, if you purchase the E71 through Rogers in Canada and attempt to upgrade it, it will give an error message saying "Your provider has not approved the latest software upgrade." In fact, Rogers has not approved any of the software upgrades since the launch firmware. However, my E71 is unlocked and was purchased directly from Nokia. I get an update for the phone about every 3-4 months.

@Atlantian You may want to check your facts! I currently have two Nokia handsets. The E71 and 3120c. Both of which get updates once every couple of months.

A new update was released for the E71 this month, while one was released for the 3120c in March. Both of the updates contained new improvements to the built in messaging software, and in the E71's case, an increase in camera quality and Mail for Exchange 3. Both phones were released in 2008.

The E71 is probably the best phone I have owned and I plan to keep it for even longer, unless something drastically improved comes out. It has excellent battery life, has a stellar push e-mail app from Nokia, and coupled with Opera Mini and my dirt cheap Everything Plan @ $60/month which includes unlimited data and unlimited nationwide minutes, I am not complaining!

Nokia E72 in stores now, somewhere

@ HotDog:

Hey, I used to think that the camera on the E71 absolutely blew as well, until I realized that the camera does not auto-focus.

In order to focus the camera and get rid of all the blurryness, press and hold the letter "T" button on the keyboard. Since this discovery, the camera takes much better pictures! Ofcourse, it is still not at good as some of the multimedia phones out there, but it certainly improves it substantially.

Hope this trick helps you, since I've met a lot of people that didn't know about it.

Also, pardon my ignorance, but what is the use for a physical compass? The new Ovi Maps application has a digital compass built in, based on your GPS coordinates.

LoL. Because the expensive choice is ALWAYS the best choice!

I've often found that people who actually have half the class that you claim you do, tend to also keep their mouth shut. They already know that they don't have to prove anything (especially in an online battle of wits, nonetheless), and they take solace in the fact that they are happy with themselves.

So congratulations on the three degrees and making yourself out to be a steaming pile of crap. =)
