Steam streamlines updates and downloads with new content delivery system

Jul 16th 2011 11:44PM (Joystiq)
@Shockz It may save Valve's bandwidth, but it doesn't save the customer's bandwidth. With more and more ISPs setting monthly bandwidth limits, the uploading that comes with a P2P distribution model also counts towards that bandwidth. Also, Blizzard still does most of their downloads/updates via a HTTP downloader, and you can turn off the P2P alltogether and still get 1-2 MBp/s down.

Bulletstorm review: It's raining fun, hallelujah

Mar 4th 2011 10:14AM (Joystiq)
@Rabite CliffyB DID have his hands in it, actually. Bulletstorm's credits show him as a lead designer for the game. People Can Fly is owned by Epic now, and EA published the game.

GP2X gaming handheld modded with D-pad, PSP batteries (video)

May 20th 2010 9:05PM (Engadget)
I just might have to try this. Haven't touched my GP2X in at least a year, mainly due to me hating the non-dpad controls and the hassle of rechargable AA batteries (regular alkaline batteries last literally 10 minutes at most for some reason while rechargables last for hours).

@Dangerskew I just wish I could have gotten a backlit keyboard as an option on the dm4. Guess I can't have everything.

HP's Envy 17 and refreshed Pavilion laptops now shipping to stylish, on the go sorts

The title of this article is inaccurate. It says the laptops are now shipping, but the estimated build/ship date for all orders is June 1.

Also, I just ordered the dm4t and the Bing cashback makes it an amazing deal. Core i5, 4GB DDR3, switchable graphics, 320GB 7,200rpm HDD, 6-cell AND 9-cell battery all for just $770 after cashback.

Bloomberg: Palm is up for sale

Apr 12th 2010 4:36AM (Engadget)
@Tony Montana Gaming. Android sucks when it comes to gaming, and HTC can't skin WP7 as they would probably like to. Currently the only choice you have if you want to be "serious" about gaming on your phone is the iPhone and to a lesser degree a Pre, but that's mainly just ported iPhone games. WebOS can do whatever kind of gaming thrown at it, provided the hardware has enough power and HTC could use this to their advantage and release a WebOS device with buttons for gaming or a huge screen for enjoyable touch controls.

Bloomberg: Palm is up for sale

Apr 12th 2010 4:31AM (Engadget)
@TechnicalFire I was thinking about this the other day and think it would be a great thing to happen. RIM's hardware is solid, they have a HUGE marketshare at the moment, but they have an aging mediocre OS and are struggling to capture the non-business market with a touchscreen phone people actually want. Palm has an awesome and unique OS that everyone loves, but won't buy due to poor advertising, low quality hardware, battery life issues, and being convinced by a salesman to buy something else like the Droid. RIM could buy Palm and use WebOS for the next generation of Pearl and Storm devices, and keep their "legacy" OS for their other devices like the Curve and Tour. These consumer phones wouldn't even carry the Blackberry name, as that name is viewed as uncool and boring by most people my age (18), but not Palm's name as the terrible advertising for the current WebOS devices has somewhat tarnished the Palm brand. Yes, people may remember the good ol' days of their Treo or Pilot when they think of Palm, but those are most likely the type of people who are happily using a Blackberry at the moment.

Although RIM + Palm looks good on paper, I don't think it would work out for very long. WebOS is a fantastic mobile OS, but it's nowhere near finished and still has countless bugs and annoyances that need to be worked out. Many Pre owners feel as though they were sold a beta product because there are so many kinks to work out, but they stick around because they love the concepts such as card-based multitasking. Palm has definitely shown effort in removing these issues, but they aren't doing it quick enough and RIM wouldn't offer much help as they are failing to do anything with the BB OS. As time goes on, it would take too long for WebOS to mature to a level everyone loves and by the time that does happen, all of the other smartphone OS'es will be leaps and bounds beyond WebOS. Once someone manages to pull off multitalking in a way that's just as or more intuitive than WebOS, it's gone.

Bloomberg: Palm is up for sale

As a current owner of the original Sprint Pre, I really, really hope HTC buys Palm. I've already planned to buy the EVO 4G as soon as I possibly can, but I dreaded switching over to Android as I now take so many things in WebOS for granted and it is just overall a much more polished user experience.

One thing HTC could do with Palm is gaming. As of right now, they don't have any platforms that work well for 3D gaming like on the iPhone. Android is very fragmented and nobody wants to develop a large game for a specific Android device. Yes, WP7 has tons of gaming support and capability, but HTC can't do the fancy skinning jobs they love to do so much on WM6.5 and Android.
Palm's WebOS has plenty of support for 3D gaming, and their new plug-in based development kit makes it easy to code native apps for the OS and it's also easy to port iPhone games over to the Pre. There are several big-name developers like Gameloft and EA who port a good number of their titles to the iPhone and they run just as good if not better than on the iPhone, however are not much fun since touch controls on a screen as small as the Pre's is not much fun, but HTC can fix that!

Entelligence: Mobile multitasking is mostly a myth

Mar 26th 2010 6:48PM (Engadget)
@Tpw104 That would not even be possible as Apple does not allow any developer to release an app that duplicates a feature that the iPhone already includes, including a web browser.
