Sublime joins Guitar Hero: World Tour, Activision confirms previous acts, details

May 22nd 2008 1:21PM (Joystiq)
That mohawk guy is totally rocking a BC. Rich Beast-ish guitar. FINALLY a guitar rhythm game that has MY real guitar's body. Yes, silly to want to rock out on a virtual version of my own real six string but still, it'll make the online element fun.

The create a guitar mode should be fun too.

Not seeing how the create a song will work too well...

Splatterhouse resurrected for 'next-gen' consoles

Apr 23rd 2008 2:32PM (Joystiq)
Splatterhouse was my first bloody game experience, long before Mortal Kombat. Ah, the good old days. Splatterhouse 3 was brutal and violent. Joy!

Another analyst says Wii Fit will push Wii shortages

Apr 17th 2008 12:38PM (Joystiq)
I find it surprising that so many of you are so willing to accept the fact that the Wii, and perhaps gaming in general, is being thought of as a fad.

Believe if or not, I'm not a hardcore gamer. I have a life that doesn't revolve around a console. Yes, I do play games about an hour or two a day when I can but work, bills, family come first. The point is, hardcore gamers (the same big fat guys you all referred to) are likely to NOT buy the WiiFit. Hence why I said "TRY" instead of "BUY."

My entire point is not that the Wii SUCKS OMG ITS SO POPULAR!!11!. My point is that John and Jane Q Public have a tendency to ruin and deface products that become mega hits. I don't mind if the average consumer buys and plays a Wii, but I do mind it when the average consumer turns the Wii into the next Elmo, Furby, Beanie Baby, or Cabbage Patch Doll. This inflates the price, limits the quantity, and keeps the Wii from getting into the hands of someone who legitimately wants to game and doesn't want the Wii because it's the next big thing or it'll be a hit at the next party.

Call me old fashioned, or just call me old. I just miss the time when gaming wasn't something that led to controversy, huge shortages, and wacky soccer moms fighting over the last console in the store ala Tickle Me Elmo. To me gaming is a hobby, not a fad.

I've always felt the Wii suffers from a split-personality.

The Wii I like, the Wii that currently has Kart coming, Brawl rocking, and Galaxy/Zelda/Metroid in its near past, is the Wii I feel should get the spotlight and sell a quadrillion units.

The Wii the public likes, the Wii that only plays WiiSports/Play at parties, is the Wii I despise. Call me isolationist but I don't like the average consumer keeping the gaming public from obtaining a console.

I guess I just hate it when my own father-in-law asks me if there are any more casual Wii titles out that don't suck.

...$250+$90 = $340...

Why would the average consumer pay that much for a balance board and waggle controls?

Because the average consumer is retarded.

Hardcore gamers will TRY the WiiFit. Susie Homemaker, her Joe Schmo hubby, and their preteen little darlings will BUY the WiiFit because Time, CNN, and Ladies Home Journal will tell them to.

I also see an incoming boom in the fad diet/exercise market. I can see the books now. "Get Slim with your WiiFit" or "Wiiout your workout!"

*epic sigh*

At least there's a new International Track and Field...?

UK retailers strain under glut of GTAIV preorders

Those crazy Britons! Always preordering things. God Bless Best Buy and its penchant for overstocking.

Guitar Hero III gets Modern Metal, free Dropkick Murphys tunes coming

Mar 6th 2008 8:36PM (Joystiq)
Ugh, I love how they term three songs that obstentially fit into "Mallcore" and "Nu Metal" MODERN METAL!!! (echo!).

Yes. A7x, Thrice, and Deftones make the mall kiddies and Nu Metal hangers-on squeal in anticipation, but those of us who have been long drenched in the blood and gore of death/black metal are sorely lacking any GHness.

The sheer challenge of playing Necrophagist songs would make any hardcore GHer jump for joy. They'd be a lot harder than Through the Fire and Flames. Sweeping arpeggios, hammered and tapped scale runs, odd time signatures...it'd be a thing of beauty.

But it's not mainstream and won't appeal to the average GH player because the average GH player is the average joe, someone who probably doesn't like brutal technical death metal.

I'm just saying, Acti, give us (Few and far between) death heads some candy. A Necro or Cannibal Corpse or Napalm Death song. Speed + Technicality = Difficult but rewarding Guitar Heroing!

HD DVD group cancels pre-CES press conference

Jan 7th 2008 12:19PM (Joystiq)
I'm going to tell a little story. It may or may not have anything to do with previous comments or the content of the above article.

A week ago, I was in a major city browsing through a major retailer's HD movie section. Said major retailer, at least from experience, has a nice balanced amount of HD movies. HDDVD and BD are given about equal shelf space in every store I've been in since the war started. I was browsing through the HD section at a branch of this store I've been to many times, a store that has continued to impress me with its seemingly unbiased approach to the HD format war.

As my fiance trapsed off to the romantic DVD section (she has no need for or knowledge of HD movies) I found myself in shock. The usually robust HDDVD section, a veritable sea of burgandy, was wounded. Over half of its original space had been taken over by a wave of blue. The HD movie section was no longer a 50/50 split. Bluray had gained another 25 percent shelf space.

Surprisingly enough, as we found ourselves in another major retailer later in the day, a less technically focused one at that, I found a similar scenario. The original 50/50 split had deteriorated to a near 90/10 share. BD was so prominent at this retailer that I had to ask to find the HDDVD section for my eyes were not invasive enough. After a lengthy journey through the jungles of aisles, I was led to a small alcove that carried about 10 movies.

I left empty handed from both stores. I instead traveled back home distraught. I gently stroked my 360's HDDVD drive and my PS3's silver drive strip as I lamented the loss of retailer neutrality in the war. I thought I had the best of both worlds, but it may soon be better for me to stick with DVD instead of trying to ride the fence a little longer in this war. Perhaps there is merit in my fiance's ignorance of HD. Ignorance, it seems to me now, may indeed by bliss.

Duke Nukem Forever teaser perpetuates cycle of non-delivery

Dec 19th 2007 7:26PM (Joystiq)
10 year wait be damned, I honestly got giddy after watching that trailer.

I may have started my FPS binge with Wolfenstein on an old Win 3.1 486 years and years ago but Duke 3D was the game that made me a long-time FPS lover.

This teaser gave me that nostalgic feeling and I got all warm inside. It reminded me of a time when I played with Legos, GI Joes, and the only gaming console that mattered had Nintendo's branding. I didn't have bills or responsibilities to keep me away from fun.

In DNF, I'm not expecting the next Metroid Prime, Halo, Half Life, or Call of Duty. I'm expecting B movie cheese with a whole lotta alien gore.

Maybe I'm just old and nostalgic, but I'll be getting this day one.
