Dust 514 goes free-to-play, Vita version a 'companion app'
Mar 5th 2012 12:10PM (Joystiq)I get what the "point" is, but that doesn't mean I want to play a FPS game on a console (one I don't have to begin with). It's great for all the PS3 EVE Fans clamouring for the game and if it does well everyone will be happy I guess.
Except EVE players without a PS3, those preferring to play a FPS game on the same platform as the main game (which incidentally is the "best" platform for competitive FPS games still really) or PC gamers that like the idea of EVE, but wanted something with more action and less zZZZzzZzZzz..
I get that my first comment sounded angry/trollish enough to be voted down, but I can't be the only person that got rather irked when they anounced a FPS game in the EVE Universe that influences the other game and then proceeded to make it PS3 exclusive. Sure I understand what @silver001 said as well. You can't have it on PC as well and not have them play together with the PS3 guys, but you can't have it either, because that will conjure the old problem of the PC side having an "unfair" advantage.
In short, I wanted to play this, but I can't so I'm not happy. If there is enough audience on the PS3, nobody will care. I do wonder though just how big the PS3 pool is for a game like this, compared to the pool that'd be on PC. Especially considering this is even free to play.

Feb 23rd 2012 10:41AM (Joystiq)Also I love how it has touch screen controls that I find much more enjoyable than if they went for standard controls, but then I'm not one of the dual analog crowd that can only be happy if they give me my sticks and buttons. I find the pull back and tap mechanics to be very nice and more involved than just pressing different buttons for different attacks.
I especially appreciate that they actually do make games with the touch controls as primary input on the 3DS at all, since my biggest worry from the start was that due to the design of the 3DS and the 3D screen being the main screen now and having another aspect ratio, the touchscreen would be completely disregarded by devs that are just as rigid when it comes to dual analogs and buttons as the majority of vocal gamers seem to be.

Reggie Fils-Aime on the competition and what it means to be a 'garage' developer
Mar 28th 2011 12:01PM (Joystiq)I see how this goes hand in hand with Iwata's speech about dreams and believing in them and taking pride in your work and be full of passion and make great content that is worth good money and whatnot. Yeah I guess that once you are a proven developer, that fireplace simulator is just so much better than if you made a kickass, innovative game prototype, but you haven't sold some game prior to that.
Amusing how he talks about Steel Diver. A game that if it was made by an indie studio would probably feature 10 times as many levels, online and cost 14.99 as digital download. At which point people would still complain how it is overpriced, yet on the 3DS as launch title it's getting defended as some kind of glorious new IP that should be bought for 40 bucks to show Nintendo this is the kind of stuff you want from them.
Honestly I can't say how much this shows a certain arrogance on Nintendo's part that is sad. I'm not saying throw money at random guys who want to be game devs, but there is a difference between having an established indie studio, dedicated people with a solid prototype and passion and results and some hobo wannabe game dev sitting in his garage emailing Nintendo about a free devkit.
