Sophos releases free Mac anti-virus package

Nov 2nd 2010 12:51PM (TUAW.com)
I've never liked Sophos. Dealing with it at my work (a university) is a pain. Upon that, it's reactive, not pro-active, so it won't keep your machine from getting infected, but will keep others from catching what your machine has while the virus is being eradicated.

Free or not, Sophos is crap.

Poll: Did General Motors lie about the Chevrolet Volt?

Oct 11th 2010 3:49PM (Autoblog)
Honestly, the Volt is still an EV. Technically, a Tahoe Hybrid is an EV. EV is a very broad term, and can be applied to many vehicles available today. The volt in the old, heavily marketed configuration, was really a series HEV, despite calling it an EREV. The fact that the engine can power the wheels directly doesn't change the fact that it really isn't that different. It's still an HEV, and arguably still an EREV. Instead of it being a series HEV, it's now a series-parallel HEV, going into the partially parallel mode during certain specific situations.

We were misinformed, and GM PR told us wrong, but in the grander scheme of things, the 230 MPG promise and EV only range were bigger lies than "the motor does not directly power the wheels"-lie.

iDVD - black sheep of the iLife suite

Jun 26th 2009 1:50PM (TUAW.com)
The time limit on a DVD has to do with the format the video is encoded in - MPEG2. Since iDVD is simple, the bit rate cannot be changed and thus, due to the limited space, you are limited to 120 minutes of good-quality video. It's sorta like the old-fashioned Audio CD - you are limited to 80 minutes and no more.

iDVD may make videos with 120 minutes and still have space left over. This extra space is usually filled with extra features such as extra audio tracks (for the videos), sub titles, etc, or (in the case of a slideshow) photos that can be copied to the hard drive. Then again, I'm going on features that I had when I last used iDVD - iDVD '05. Haven't really played around with it since.

Compared to many other consumer DVD authoring applications, iDVD is actually pretty tame. It is extremely simple and, if you know how to work with it, quick to use.

Also - watch your hard drive space. I hate it when I have less than 20 GB left. It pains me to see it on my own drives and pains me to see it on anybody else's.
