Dec 24th 2008 12:19PM (Joystiq)
I'll be giving it as a gift to my sister's boyfriend, whom will be getting a PS3 for christmas from my sister. She absolutely loves lumines, so hopefully they would be able to enjoy it together on their freshly opened PS3.

Jeanne d'Arc and Ratchet fight for IAA awards

Jan 18th 2008 8:24PM (Joystiq Playstation)
After playing all of 2007's GOTY Candidates on PC, Consoles, and Handhelds, Jeanne D'arc is still one of my favourite games of 2007, it deserves way more respect than it's been getting.

Can a Canadian like me have a chance at winning that poster? I'd be willing to pay shipping and then some to get my big grubby hands on one of those.

Hey joystiq! Way to post and without having a clue what you're talking about for the second time! Sony doesn't have a software Back-Compat solution. All they have is software which Emulates the Emotion Engine on the Cell processor. Hey what's missing in that you ask? I'd say the GPU emulation is missing! Hey! here comes a PS3 model which doesn't have either the PS2 CPU or GPU (unlike the other PAL units and 80GB NTSC units which still have the PS2 GPU) and it doesn't support back-compat, yet you guys claim that it would cost sony nothing to upload the software which doesn't exist into these new 40GB PS3s and you give out your first ever "WTF award" based on your lack of knowledge. Well, I commend you, you must have a glowing pair of balls.

40GB PS3 official for Europe -- no backwards compatibility, at all

Oct 5th 2007 1:28PM (Joystiq)
It still has two USB ports which are plenty, unless you are playing rock band, while recharging controllers and using a external USB HDD. While memory card readers and USB ports are cheap, they do cost quite a bit of cash in the big picture though.

I would agree with you on your use of back-compat on new systems except for the PS3 ironically enough. I for some reason or another stopped paying attention to the PS2 half-way through it's life while i got addicted to halo and Kotor and whatnot on the Xbox. I bought a PS3 at launch, i completed Resistance, so the only other games to play on the systems were PS2 games, so i went out and bought about 20 PS2 games all for around $19 each. I then discovered many great franchises which i had missed out on. I must say, I'm glad to have my NTSC 60GB PS3 :)

No, I'm just rational and don't quote people who no longer work for Sony. I just like videogames, I don't understand why someone wouldn't like a system that played videogames, seems kinda odd to me (not directed specifically at you, but rather the majority of commentators i see posting nonsense around here)

40GB PS3 official for Europe -- no backwards compatibility, at all

The 40GB has no backwards compatibility because they removed both the Emotion Engine CPU and the PS2's GPU (forget it's name) from the motherboard. The 80GB (and 60GB for PAL regions) model PS3s still have backwards compatibilty because they only removed the Emotion Engine CPU to cut down on costs, the software emulation in those models still make use of the PS2's GPU which is the hardest component to emulate in a games machine.

This is a smart decision, anyone who disagrees is incorrect. The 40GB PS3 will be the entry level system for people who just want to get a PS3 to play PES 2008 or whatnot. Seeing as most people do not use backwards compatibility on their games consoles (asides from a system's launch, when there is nothing else to play on the machine) it's a good move to take it out and offer the system at a lower price, while keeping the option of having Back-Compat in the higher end model for those of us with massive PS2 collections.

The PS3 is in trouble because of it's library and price point. Sony is working on a vast array of excellent first and second party games to remedy the first problem, and while unfortunate, it's necessary to cut corners where people will notice the least in order to bring the price of the system down to something reasonable. Doing this is the only way the PS3 can become a serious competitor in this very strange 7th generation race.

Japanese PS3 game available via Remote Play

Jun 6th 2007 1:09PM (Joystiq Playstation)
When I boot this game up, it updated, then it gives me a black screen with some japanese text with the letters "PS" in the second paragraph. it also has a little spinning clock icon in the lower right hand corner. I tried pressing all the buttons and do not understand what it wants from me.

Folding@home saves the world (via PlayStation 3) March 23rd

@11

Many people I know already have their 300watt PCs running 24/7 doing nothing but collecting IMs or downloading porn. This is at least better than that.

Energy consumption does not cause global warming, unclean methods of generating energy helps cause global warming.
