Especially if you play against real people. There's actually quite a bit of strategy involved when you're playing against real opponents, even more so if the map is small.
If you're going to run into an enemy long before you have much tech researched, figuring out how much to spend on research, fleets, and defense is a matter of life or death.
I'm playing, trying to get my hall of monuments to 30. My guild dissolved, and no one that I knew plays any more, so it's a long, uphill battle with M.O.X. and Ogden.
It's nice to have a bunch of people playing the game and saying, "Yeah, this game is awesome." It's one thing to speculate, it's another to have some sort of confirmation.
Valve does own the property involved. They created their own game, using the guy who's spent the most time working on the DotA mod. They are seeking to trademark a name that has not been trademarked before.
Legally, they have every right to protect their property. If the mod belongs to anyone, it belongs to the guy who's been developing it for the last seven years, who currently works for Valve.
Especially given that Blizzard announced their own "Blizzard DOTA" about a year after Valve hired IceFrog, I can understand why they would see fit to trademark the name.
EVE fascinates me, but I'm so far behind the curve at this point, I don't have the time to invest to catch up. I wish I'd discovered it years ago, maybe found a good corp.
Aside from that, the last few MMOs I've picked up have disappointed. WAR held my attention for a little while, FFXIV had enough potential to hold my interest for a couple of weeks (before I hit the wall of, "This leveling system is really nice. What am I leveling for, again?"), and CoH I, again, got into too long after launch.
So now I'm tooling around with GW, waiting for GW2 and a game that can capture and improve on EVE's open-ended awesomeness.
